This has really cheered me up this morning:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-56153600

Such good news!! And my younger (early 40s, healthy) brother has just been offered a vaccine tomorrow (SE England), which must mean they're making great progress.

I wonder if they might speed up some of the lifting of restrictions?

That data explains why the government are wanting everything open asap. It proves that the vaccines work well irl as well as in carefully controlled trials. It is incredibly good news and I feel like doing a mini dance about it!

WankmasterBastardDeLaShithead · 22/02/2021 10:46

Yes, it's genuinely the best covid news I've seen since it all started. I was feeling pretty down about the Times' leak re: the timescale for reopening things.... I am really really hoping that this might mean things can be speeded up a bit.

Great news Smile

And that is the best possible argument- for waiting until more people are vaccinated before sending all children into school where there are few mitigations.

If vaccines are so effective - and I believe that they are- then we should exploiting our good position with them.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/02/2021 10:52

Also note the AZ figures are better than Pfizer.

herecomesthsun · 22/02/2021 10:53

we should BE exploiting them

Brilliant news

Excellent news. Feeling so much more hopeful today than I have done in ages. I have bought some daffodils for my windowsill too which always cheer me up.

herecomesthsun · 22/02/2021 10:56

Also note there is a comment about trials of Pfizer used 2 doses and we are deviating from the manufacturer's recommendation about that (for good reasons, but we still have many people with just the 1 dose)

Racoonworld · 22/02/2021 10:57

Brilliant news. I agree with a cautious opening up whilst we get through the bulk of the 9 priority vaccine groups but no reason whatsoever why there should be restrictions after that. Come on spring/summer Grin

thatgingergirl · 22/02/2021 10:58

Great news. Here's to everyone and anyone, in any way whatsoever, involved in the development of the vaccines, and getting them into arms!

Yes, but today's results are from real UK experience. So they are actually based on how we the vaccines work in the UK based on the UK dosing regimes. We are no longer relying on data from trials, nor from other countries (eg Israel). The one real risk with the vaccines was that they wouldn't work as well irl as they did in trials. This news is the first UK evidence that they do!

Anna12345678910 · 22/02/2021 11:14

Vaccines work - history shows that. However, it's a numbers game so more and more people need to get vaccinated so that they get the best change to work.

WELL DONE TO EVERYONE INVOLVED IN VACCINE DEVELOPMENT, THE VACCINE TRIALS, THE VOLUNTEERS, THE VACCINE ROLL OUT ETC and to the people that are booking and taking the vaccines when offered. Amazing

Anna12345678910 · 22/02/2021 11:15

I feel so fantastically POSITIVE today.

I agree with you 100% on this. I fear there will be a lot of pressure to open up too soon and thus undo all the good work we’ve done.

Check out Chris van Tulleken on Twitter because he recently posted a really salient thread on this. I’m not clever enough to link to it!

For The 'anti-vax' lot

What would a world without any vaccines look like?

You need to read the latest data on one dose of Pfizer
Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 22/02/2021 11:22

Always has been showing to do that. People just choose to listen to Pfizer run or associated data and take it as gospel. In Israel there were 3000 suspected cases not taken into account in the last results. Either way not a lot between the two vaccines. They both are good in different ways.

@Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum

Thanks, I was referring to the link in the OP, which comments on this

"But for the Pfizer vaccine studies, that had involved a second dose being given after three weeks.

The UK has adopted a policy of delaying the second jab of both vaccines by three months, which had led some to question whether the approach would give sufficient immunity.

The trials of the AstraZeneca looked at a longer dosing interval so there was more confidence about that vaccine." from the BBC article quoted in the link Smile
