Would you say anything, and could work do anything?

I work with elderly and vulnerable people. Newish colleague has told me (and other people) that they regularly have family round to their house, multiple adult children with partners, grandchildren etc. Had a friend come to cut their hair. Colleague also visits various family members.

I'm worried for our service users. If I reported to manager is there anything they could do? I'm not sure of the rules surrounding what employees do in their own time.

If they're breaking the rules, it might be a disciplinary situation.

DaanSaaf · 21/02/2021 21:04

@MrsHamlet it could be I suppose. They're just so blase about it all. We've been asked to take regular lateral flow tests but it's not compulsory so they won't. Lots off negative comments about the vaccine, I'm just so worried their carelessness will infect vulnerable people.

Ooh this is a tricky one, this would make me feel really uncomfortable in your position and I think I'd have to say something to management.

I'm really not sure if work could do anything as it's out of work hours?

MrsHamlet · 21/02/2021 21:06

That's a really tricky situation. I suppose the question is what's the worst case scenario for them? And what about for the service users?

covetingthepreciousthings · 21/02/2021 21:07

I would think if they're being very blasé about it and negative about the vaccine it could potentially be brought up by management as they wouldn't want service users family to catch wind of any of this as it could potentially bring the reputation of the workplace / workers down and/or cause friction.

Of not off in last post obvious.

I think I'll have an off the record chat with manager tomorrow and see what he says. It's been playing on my mind all weekend, I'm just so uncomfortable with them around our service users.

I think some of what she is doing is against the law, so I would think your employer could do something about it.

If I were employing carers I would expect them to be required to obey Covid restrictions as part of their terms of employment. They are endangering those whom they are supposed to be supporting.

PinkTonic · 21/02/2021 22:01

If she’s newish she has no employment rights. She should be reported and dismissed. If I was her boss I’d say breaking the law in this way constitutes gross misconduct and fire her without a second thought.

Seems pretty unanimous to report it anyway, was expecting some myob replies tbh. I'll speak to manager tomorrow, thanks all.
