One thing to make schools safer

There are a lot of threads about schools and covid. I get lost in the rage and strong opinions even though I am sure that somewhere in there there are constructive suggestions.
Without expressing any views on politics/the govt or any fury, what is the top thing that you think could realistically be done to make schools safer when they reopen? Just one suggestion per answer please.

Daily test

WhenSheWasBad · 21/02/2021 19:28

Not sure why I got singled out. I’m not the only poster who thought that was an odd thing to say.

Rotas

pinkhappy · 21/02/2021 19:38

I am not sure how rotas work. Is this half the class in every other day alternating? What does the other half do when they are not in? What do working parents do?

If the children could join in lesson via video link that could work but schools don't seem to be offering that currently when they have half the year in with key workers. Otherwise it looks like children are getting a 50% education.

Parents might be getting 50% childcare but the children won’t be getting 50% education. With a smaller class I could get through so much more and give the children better attention when they are there.

LadyPenelope68 · 21/02/2021 19:41

@Mol1628
I don’t agree with masks for primary. Children would be constantly touching them meaning they’re pointless.
Most other countries have children wearing masks from reception age, they all manage it. They get used to them.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 21/02/2021 19:42

The half at home do home learning. Like they do now.
Half time in school is better than no time in school surely.

AllAroundTheWrekin · 21/02/2021 19:43

Masks

My second choice would be rotas.

Benjispruce2 · 21/02/2021 19:44

@LadyPenelope68 they don’t fiddle with their masks any more than adults. Give children some credit. They can, they do, they will.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 21/02/2021 19:45

What do working parents do?

What are they doing now?

I was saying they won’t fiddle, they’ll get used to them, it was the other poster saying she doesn’t agree with them for primary because they’ll fiddle with them.

My preferred option - bearing in mind I only teach year 10 upwards - would be 50% of the class in week A for face to face. In week b, they consolidate that learning at home whilst I teach the other 50%. Everyone gets the same diet that way.

TheKeatingFive · 21/02/2021 19:50

What about KW children?

Angel2702 · 21/02/2021 19:52

Masks on indoors not just in the corridors.

MrsHamlet · 21/02/2021 19:52

They're in the library where they are now in week B, and in class in week A.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 21/02/2021 19:52

KW rates low at secondary so they could be supervised elsewhere in school on their "off" weeks.

Primary I don't know the answer. Would KW rates drop if half a week was face to face?
Would primary open fully and secondary on a rota be better until Easter?

HalfPastThree · 21/02/2021 19:53

@HercwasanEnemyofEducation

What do working parents do?

What are they doing now?

Mainly either doing their jobs terribly, or giving them up, in my experience. I'm not sure what people were expecting to happen!
pinkhappy · 21/02/2021 19:53

What do working parents do?What are they doing now?

Some are on furlough but that will end. Some, especially women, are seeing their careers die.

Where's your can-do attitude, TheKeatingFive?

pinkhappy · 21/02/2021 19:54

What about KW children?

Yes. The rota idea doesn't work at all for primary schools.

OP posts:
HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 21/02/2021 19:56

The rota wouldn't be forever though, just a few weeks until we've vaccinated a few more people and seen the impact of opening schools. A solid 2-3 days of your child in school would be preferable to the situation now surely.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 21/02/2021 19:58

Agreed rota is vvvv hard for primary. Potentially very strict KW criteria for front line only and including teachers (all back in school), shop workers, NHS, and police. Not people who works for halfords website etc.

MrsHamlet · 21/02/2021 19:58

I did say I can only speak for my own experience. I don't know how it could work for primary because I'm not familiar with primary.

YouKnowItsTrue · 21/02/2021 19:59

Weekly COVID tests

Benjispruce2 · 21/02/2021 19:59
