What restrictions will still be in place when all adults are vaccinated?

Sorry in advance for a crystal ball question...

I hear a lot about vaccines as the end-goal, but I’ve also heard that they don’t stop transmission.

I’m curious if anything has been suggested about what sorts of restrictions and precautions would still be in place after we have wide-scale vaccinations? And for how long?

When all adults vaccinated, international travel will have regulations and large intimate gatherings will take time to return.

Once nightclubs are open, if any remain, we will know we're done!

MaxNormal · 20/02/2021 17:53

Hopefully none otherwise what's the point?

nordica · 20/02/2021 18:03

They do reduce transmission, there has been lots in the news about this recently both AZ and Pfizer vaccines.

But no vaccine is 100% effective, especially with the new variants emerging so the restrictions need to be lifted slowly enough to see what happens. Hopefully in time they can be all dropped as infection rates go down - although as they keep saying, until the whole world is vaccinated, no one is safe (the virus will likely mutate further anywhere it is spreading a lot), so it may just take time to reach that point.

Exactly this.

There will no way people will comply, or even any need for it after people are vaccinated.

If you want to carry on staying at home, socially distancing, wearing masks and doing nothing more exciting than going to the supermarket, then what's stopping you?

cinammonbuns · 20/02/2021 18:06

I’m guessing masks will still be used next winter even if all adults are vaccinated.

I agree. We have to get back to a normal life. We live with flu and the vaccine deals with it. The same must apply to Covid.
Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/02/2021 18:30

There shouldn't be any after all adults are vaccinated. If there are restrictions after vaccinations then they will be there permanently surely? There's nothing more we can do.

MarshaBradyo · 20/02/2021 18:32

Hopefully none

RaspberryCoulis · 20/02/2021 18:33

Some people may use them.

If they are not compulsory I will not be one of them.

Lemons1571 · 20/02/2021 18:35

I think children will need to be vaccinated. If the virus rips through them (schools) it could cause a vaccine dodging variant?

Research so far shows transmission is reduced by 67% I think, so two thirds. I suspect the narrative will change to “vaccines stop transmission”. Otherwise we will be social distancing until a different vaccine is produced that fully stops transmission m, and the country can’t afford to lock down until then. It’s a balancing act and the vaccine just has to be “good enough”.

TwirpingBird · 20/02/2021 18:40

concerts with packed crowds wont happen for a long time, international travel will have regulations (testing negative I imagine), I think they will still tell us to wear masks in busy public places. Although I think after this year is done they will struggle to enforce restrictions. Varients will be blamed for the need for restrictions, but I think most people (IRL, compared to MN) will come to realise we all need to crack on after all adults are vaccinated.

ilikegrapes21 · 20/02/2021 18:42

The level of restrictions in place will of course depend on hospitalisations and whether the NHS copes with each stage of easing.

Even after all adults are vaccinated I expect there will still be restrictions on international travel (e.g. testing, quarantine) depending on the prevalence of new variants and infection rates abroad. Within the UK I'm expecting the following over the next 12 months at least while we see how next winter goes-

-social distancing indoors meaning reduced capacity in hospitality, offices (WFH to continue)
-mandatory masks indoors
-school bubbles to continue
-most uni teaching online
-maybe 100 max for conferences/events indoors
-there will be some rules around SD within private households but people won't stick to this once all adults have been offered the vaccine.

In a nutshell I don't think the situation will be hugely different until at least summer 2022 compared to last summer even once all adults have been offered both doses.

Echobelly · 20/02/2021 18:45

They may want to keep masks and distancing and limited gathering numbers for a while until they can be sure it all works effectively and keep an eye on variants, perhaps?

I'm hoping people might be able to mix in a few households once vaccinated - that would make life 100% better than now, if it meant you could have a few friends over.

chipsandpeas · 20/02/2021 18:46

the government probably dont even know what restrictions will be in place in the next month let alone when everyone is vaccinated

Mintjulia · 20/02/2021 18:52

If all adults in the U.K. are vaccinated - who accept the vaccine - I guess inward travellers will still face restrictions.
Maybe need a recent negative test before getting on a plane.
And I imagine certain jobs will require vaccination - medical and care roles perhaps.

Beaniecats · 20/02/2021 18:53

There shouldn't be any and its outrageous if there is

NeverForgetYourDreams · 20/02/2021 18:55

None hopefully. We all dont stay home in flu season

Tanfastic · 20/02/2021 18:58

I can't see the use of masks in our office going anywhere for a long time. To be honest I'm quite happy about us being so read out forever because we were far too cooped up before but the masks, I'm getting so fed up if wearing them at my desk now.

Tanfastic · 20/02/2021 18:58

So spread out that was meant to read

OrangeBananaFish · 20/02/2021 19:01

Full restrictions are here for a looonnnng time. We are going to be in and out of lockdowns for years to come. Im afraid it is how it is going to be, sorry. Just kidding, thought I'd get there before someone comes along and says it because they will.

We bloody well better come out of restrictions. I can't go on for much longer and the lockdown doesn't really have too much negative impact on my life. In a few ways its actually improved some areas. That still didn't stop the depression setting in during 2020 which I'm just about keeping at bay right now.

I'm thinking that international travel may be restricted in some ways until the world gets vaccinated. Also large gatherings are a way off, but I honesty think that most other restrictions will be lifted in some way.

katieloves · 20/02/2021 19:04

Probably schools will still be closed as they’re not safe.

Lemons1571 · 20/02/2021 19:07

@katieloves

Probably schools will still be closed as they’re not safe.
And teachers will still be waiting for a vaccination as they will have been pushed down to 40th on the jcvi list behind the 6 year olds
Hairwizard · 20/02/2021 19:18

There better not be any.

everythingisstillginandroses · 20/02/2021 19:31

Outrageous Hmm
