Dh has received a hearing appointment to be assessed by phone call
This is almost as rich as his phone cardiology appointment
Anybody else had other appointments that make you shake your head!

I was offered a phone ophthalmology appointment for my 3 year old. Ridiculous.

YouHaveAuthorityJackieWeaver · 19/02/2021 15:01

Bonkers. My DH has a hearing impairment and I always remember (with a little sad head shake) the time when I was at the audiology clinic with him. The method of alerting the next patient was for the audiologist to stand outside their office door and say (not shout) the next patient's name. It was a long corridor, there was list of hustle and bustle, and the patients were there because their hearing wasn't 100%. Sometimes I despair!

RedskyBynight · 19/02/2021 15:02

I'm sure there is a place for phone consultations, but every single time DD has had one (she has ongoing foot pain, which unsurprisingly it's impossible to determine the cause of, over the phone), she's been told there is nothing that can be done over the phone, and we end up having to make a f2f appointment anyway (sometimes with wait of several months). Can't see how it's more efficient to have 2 appointments rather than 1.

My DM had a hospital appointment recently. Due to Covid, no one could go with her into the hospital.
On arrival in the department... Given forms to fill out. Thos was for a cateract appointment. None of the patients could read the forms...

HappyWipings · 19/02/2021 15:07

@RedskyBynight yes , definitely. I had a physio appointment by phone for my son. This was fine as it was a follow up and the issue had been his delayed walking , during lockdown 1 he began to walk , run and jump. It was actually easier to tell them that on the phone rather than travel half way accross London to do so!

Gobacktothe90s · 19/02/2021 15:25

My son had a orthodontist appointment to measure up for new braces and instead of looking in his mouth the dentist stood way back and took camera pictures with my son having mouth separators in to open his mouth.
He also used mirrors as well on a long stick.
It was the bizarrest dentist appointment ever especially as they was measuring up for braces where you would think you would have to look properly inside the mouth not rely on mirrors and a camera

MrsHamlet · 19/02/2021 15:28

Contact lens check up via zoom.

BlueTimes · 19/02/2021 15:29

Rheumatology appointment to check whether the swelling of my joints was worse. Even Zoom would have helped but over the phone was pointless.

emmathedilemma · 19/02/2021 15:31

ffs this is ridiculous! I went to an ENT out patients appointment just to get test results which I'm sure could have been done over the phone. There were lots of people there (mostly old and with a helper) for the audiology clinic.
Remind me not to book a smear test til this is over Grin

MrsHamlet · 19/02/2021 16:05

If you could just lean back a bit more and point the camera down emmathedilemma.....

Have to have my eyes checked once a year, due to meds and various other things this was offered on the phone they insisted even though I said it’s not going to work. They kept the appointment and it was a very awkward 5 minute call and said you need to come here as we need to check your eyes I said yes I know I explained that 3 weeks ago but you didn’t listen to me.

You couldn't make it up. Am beginning to wonder if I should buy a sandwich toaster in readiness for my mammogram next month.

SomewhereUpMyArse · 19/02/2021 16:11

I had one of these just recently lol. He basically asked for all the information I'd already given the GP back in August and then said he'd book an appointment for an assessment.

I did wonder if I was going to get a hearing test over the phone but no, it's just a chat. Probably the most useless chat I've ever had in my life.

Haenow · 19/02/2021 16:13

I think I may win - I had a wound clean and change of dressing booked via phone. Grin it had been infected and I’d been in A&E who contacted my consultant for the follow up including dressing change etc. The lovely Secretary did manage to get me an actual appointment.

Juo · 19/02/2021 16:15

I have in the last year had;
Cardiology appt by video. Would have been fine but his audio wasn't working so I caught 1 in 3 words.

Physio appt by phone (can you lift your arm this way?)

Podiatry appt by phone (describe where it hurts on your feet?)

Oncology apt by phone. That was ok as just a follow up.

Rheumatology appt by phone (tell me which joints are red and swollen?). That was in October and I was promised FTF in December. Still waiting.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 19/02/2021 16:15

Conversely my elderly father recently (but pre vaccination) went all the way to their big hospital for an appointment that could have been done by phone or video call. The consultant didn't examine him.
I was a bit cross that he had been dragged into a hospital for no good reason.

RedBrickChimney · 19/02/2021 16:19

Reminds me of when I left my mobile phone in an Uber and the only way of reporting that I’d done it was via the app..... the app on the phone that I’d just left in the cab.

emmathedilemma · 19/02/2021 16:50

pmsl @Spodge although it might put the George Foreman to use, it's not been out in a while Grin

PopcornPeacock · 19/02/2021 17:13

Yes - one for physio to my jaw. How'd you do exercises with a phone clamped to one side, and how they can see you doing them correctly is beyond me.

Because of my atrocious hearing even having it on loudspeaker I still need to hold the phone to my ear.

LIZS · 19/02/2021 17:16

Dd has had ophthalmology appointments over the phone, one last autumn , next in a few weeks' time.

2typesofjungle · 19/02/2021 17:18

Physio over the phone to recover from major spinal surgery. Absolute fucking waste of everyone's time.

freezingcoldsnow · 19/02/2021 17:34

Please PLEASE feed this back to your trust / complain. There is a HUGE push in the NHS to make a vast amount of clinical work virtual and to stay that way long term after covid. Management see it as efficient and refuse to listen to the reduction in effectiveness. Honestly as a therapist, I will give up my job if I have to work remotely for my outpatients long term - it just doesn't work!
