Recent notice to shield (Feb 2021) and history of gestational diabetes

HelloViroids · 18/02/2021 13:28

This has popped up on a few other threads and had blindsided me today so thought I’d make a thread in case others want to discuss.

I had gestational diabetes but have since been tested for type 2 diabetes and don’t have it. I know my risk of type 2 is increased though. I’ve now have notice to shield and (separately) link to book vaccine.

I have no other significant risk factors (overweight but not obese, ethnicity more risky - but NOT asthma or any other respiratory conditions or similar), so I am assuming the GD must be the reason I am now being treated as CEV. Someone pointed out on another thread that gestational diabetes is a factor in the algorithm being used to add people to the list (digital.nhs.uk/coronavirus/risk-assessment) - but I had thought that would be current GD not historic?!

Just wondered if anyone else has been surprised by this - or if anyone has had GD but NOT been told to shield? I wasn’t expecting lockdown to get worse at this point Sad

I had GD a few years ago and last year was shielding for other medical reasons but bizarrely have been moved down to group 6, with no vaccine. So would be interested if a previous history of GD alone is enough for CEV if you discover this to be true.

Racoonworld · 18/02/2021 14:38

I had GD recently, and also have asthma. I haven’t been told to shield.

Beebityboo · 18/02/2021 14:40

I had GD and have had the vaccine but not been asked to shield as of yet.

saffire · 18/02/2021 14:41

Hmmm I wonder if I will get any letter through...

arthurdaly · 18/02/2021 14:44

Had GD three years ago, BMI in overweight category and been told to shield today.
The letter has gone in the bin, it's a bit late now as I've had Covid.
Also training for a marathon so presuming the NHS would rather I continue the heathy option?!

Have just read somewhere that someone was advised by their GP that GD had bee wrongly pulled into the algorithm for the new shielding letters.

doireallyneedaname · 18/02/2021 14:46

Had GD last year, BMI was 30 then. BMI has since been updated to 23. No other conditions. Received a shielding email today. WTF

doireallyneedaname · 18/02/2021 14:47

I should also add my last hba1c in August 2020 was 4.9!

Same4Walls · 18/02/2021 14:47

Are you me? Exactly the same here. I have asthma (use both brown and blue inhalers) and I had GD when pregnant and I've heard nothing.

I've had no email or letter and no one mentioned anything about shielding when I went for my yearly GD check recently.

HelloViroids · 18/02/2021 14:49

@doireallyneedaname WTF is my reaction too!

I wonder if it’s postcode related too? I live in a part of London that has statistically high levels of derivation, so maybe that’s a factor....

I just want to know if previous GD somehow puts us at severe risk? So many different answers out there already.

FebFrosting · 18/02/2021 14:54

I had GD, have asthma ( on fostair), have coeliac, no letter. Live in an affluent area, am not affluent though, am obese.

Check your junk folder. Mine and a fellow diabetic friend both found ours there

Nothing in the junk folder on either email account. Confused
SillyChumpster · 18/02/2021 14:58

I got notice to shield this morning! Had GD during my first pregnancy in 2015. Didn't have it during my second pregnancy and no issues have been flagged up after routine blood tests. I have no underlying health issues and definitely wasn't expecting to get that email in my inbox.

Racoonworld · 18/02/2021 15:06

@Same4Walls do you know if you're in group 6? I was told that I'm not despite brown and blue inhalers and history of GD. I'm wondering if it's post code related, I live in a fairly affluent area.

Same4Walls · 18/02/2021 15:09

I'm in quite a deprived area and nope I'm not in group 6 according to my GP. I asked last week and she said nothing on my notes put me in group 6.

HelloViroids · 18/02/2021 15:09

@doireallyneedaname me too - there’s a clear difference between “have GD” and “had GD” and I don’t know if that has been considered in generating the shielding list...

Whichjab · 18/02/2021 15:10

I think postcode must be making the difference,.

Anonanon12 · 18/02/2021 15:14

I have had gd in 2 pregnancies, the recent one just 5 months ago and no letter to shield. I had my blood sugars taken last week so wondering if I might get flagged up after those results if high

minipie · 18/02/2021 15:17

I had GD 6 years ago and just got a letter (much to my surprise) no other risk factors

also London so maybe it’s that?

FoxtrotSkarloey · 18/02/2021 15:20

This is worrying. I had GD during my first pregnancy but not second. I am obese (but working on that). I've heard nothing.

@Same4Walls how come you have a yearly check?

doireallyneedaname · 18/02/2021 15:21

@FoxtrotSkarloey everyone with GD should have an annual hba1c as we are at higher risk of type 2

Same4Walls · 18/02/2021 15:21

@Same4Walls how come you have a yearly check?

Aren't you meant to have a check each year to keep a look out for type 2 diabetes? I thought that was normal?

ExpulsoCorona · 18/02/2021 15:22

GP here - it's an error. It's such a headache! It's due to the computer thinking you still have gestational diabetes. Which obviously you don't if you're not pregnant.
