I thought my anti bacterial wipes killed it but apparently no as they only kill bacteria.

Can anyone help recommend something?

You are wiping it away so I suppose it doesn't matter if its dead or not. You get antiviral wipes as well I think. I just use antibacterial ones as surface transmission is not the main transmission route

Where are you using them? Just soap and water is totally sufficient for cleaning - soap interferes with the coating of the virus.

Dettol wipes website say they kill covid 19

At the start of covid we were told just to use baby wipes on our hands to freshen up if no washing facilities (community) as like you said it is a virus not a bacteria. This may have now changed though with new findings that seem to come out all the time.

Antibacterial wipes are helpful and convenient but the thing with wipes is that unless you wipe once and throw you are just wiping and spreading it around the surface.
Hot, soapy water is thought to break down the outside phospholipid layer of the virus making it incapable of survival so to speak. So the soap breaks it down and the water washes it away.
High alcohol wipes and gels etc destroy the virus but you’re missing the washing away action so could potentially leave undamaged virus behind.
So depending what you’re wiping (you can’t exactly dunk a keyboard!) hot soapy water would be best.

I use antiviral wipes (89p in Aldi) and also the fabulous anti bacterial and anti viral spray (which smells divine BlushGrin)

Any kind of normal cleaner on a cloth will be fine for the surfaces and door handles, I don’t know about wiping shopping, but it looks a lot like the risks from fomite transmission are a lot lower than first thought, so I think a lot of people have stopped now. Obviously, I don’t know your circumstances and how vulnerable you are - if it makes you feel better then I guess there’s no harm, but it does look like it’s helping either, and wipes aren’t cheap.

Fabulosa that should say

If it's for cleaning at home then just use hot soapy water. It's much better for your skin and for the environment too. I really dislike antibacterial wipes and only use them if there's no other option.

RedBrickChimney · 17/02/2021 22:00

Dettol wipes should work. Falling that, blow torch the affected area*.

  • Not a serious suggestion.
Muskox · 17/02/2021 22:02

Hot soapy water will break down the virus.

It's a bit of a fallacy that anti-bacterial products don't kill viruses. Depends what they are made of. Alcohol, QUATS etc. kill viruses just as well, it's just that in "the before times" peoplemosy worried about bacteria, so that was the marketing on the packet.

Weedsnseeds1 · 17/02/2021 22:05

People mostly

Mostly unnecessarily. There is no need for hand wash / kitchen cleaner to kill 99.9% of all bacteria. The only time I go near my Dettol is if I've been unfortunate enough to step in dog poo.
SlantyBaws · 17/02/2021 22:14

If you need serious stuff, Bacoban wipes are the way to go. Not cheap though.

Ginfordinner · 17/02/2021 22:25

Anything containing >60% alcohol
Any virucidal product compliant with EN14476
Hot, soapy water
Dettol
Bleach

It is important to chack the contact time. A quick wipe might not be enough contact time to envelope the virus.

HesterShaw1 · 17/02/2021 22:26

Soap and water and a bit of kitchen roll or clean cloth.

The amount of single use waste we're producing and throwing away at the moment is terrifying.
