Is it cheeky to ask to be weighed when getting a smear test?

Last time I was weighed, during a medical appointment, was a little over a year ago. My BMI was 39.something then.

I have been trying to keep on top of it, but things have been all over the place recently, and judging by the way my clothes fit I wouldn’t be surprised if I’ve gained a bit over the last year during all these lockdowns. The scales we had at home broke a few months ago and we’ve not got round to replacing them.

Now, today, I’ve just received a letter from my GP surgery saying that my smear test is due.
Would it be massively cheeky to ask the nurse to weigh me when I go in for the smear test?
As if I have gained a few pounds over the past year, that might have tipped my BMI over 40 and put me in a category that’s eligible for a covid vaccine sooner rather than later?

I think this is probably fine, I'm pretty sure I've been weighed before at my smear test or my asthma review. I can't see any harm in asking.

Unreasonabubble · 17/02/2021 18:31

It's not cheeky, our Nurses do it as a matter of course.

How old are you? Putting on weight, does it move you significantly into another group? I.E. from 9 to 6? Are you concerned with catching Covid and having serious side effects because of your size? You really should not worry, they will do everyone eventually. Smile

MatildaStoker · 17/02/2021 19:01

I’m mid-40’s.

So if my BMI has gone above 40, it would mean moving from group 10 to group 6.

I am worried about side effects if I catch covid, but yes, I’m sure they’ll get round to everyone sooner or later.

My friend did this while she was having her smear - her BMI was recorded in the system as being over 40 and they gave her the flu jab then and there.

I’m guessing she will be on the group 6 list for that surgery too.

Oh they did my weight at my smear just as a general check before going further, I think they do this anyway? No harm in asking for the results though

I had a smear last month and wasn't weighed. Although the nurse was lovely and happily answered a few extra questions I had so I'm
Sure a quick weigh wouldn't be an issue Smile

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 17/02/2021 19:35

They'll probably do it anyway. They did mine at a pill check. The nurse proclaimed all excited 'that's half a stone lighter than last time!' Sadly last time was 6 weeks after the baby was born so not so much to celebrate really. SadGrin

They didn't do mine automatically.

It didn't stop her being incredibly rude about my weight though. She was really nasty & very rough. I really should have reported her.

I'm diabetic, so G6 Anyway. 15 rooms being used that day & a queue of people being sent to random rooms...guess who was in there 🤦🏻‍♀️

She managed to hurt me doing that too. She's never coming near me again.

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 17/02/2021 19:38

I did but I had rung up to ask so had a note on my booking that I needed to be weighed.

doireallyneedaname · 17/02/2021 19:51

I was weighed at my last smear because it was my first one post partum. The delightful obstetrician had taken great pleasure in declaring me “obese” when my BMI hit 30 at 37 weeks pregnant. The nurse was really confused when she saw me but said she had to weigh me anyway, then proceeded to remove me from the system as such. I regret that now though, wish I was still on there Grin

Yes ask to be weighed!

Daisysflowers · 17/02/2021 20:00

@Unfairtomiddling surely they can’t make you change doctors if you don’t get weighed?
Are they asking you to weigh yourself and inform them or to go in and be weighed?

That’s terrible if so, I have never heard anything like that before.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 17/02/2021 20:33

Definitely ask. Say you think your BMI is Over 40 and ask them to weigh you. Then ask them to confirm that it puts you in group 6.

MatildaStoker · 17/02/2021 20:33

I’ve never been weighed at a smear test before, maybe it’s something that depends on the GP practice?

Anyway sounds like asking to be weighed shouldn’t be a problem Smile

@Unfairtomiddling that sounds like a really odd demand!

I had mine last week.

The scales were behind the privacy curtain so I just hopped on them Grin

missnevermind · 17/02/2021 20:45

Yes. If I see a set of scales at a nurses appointment I sometimes ask if it's OK to weigh myself. I also offer for them to record it if they would like too.

Boulshired · 17/02/2021 21:20

It does show how different practices work, I don’t think I have never not been weighed. Smear, blood pressure and then weight.

HesterShaw1 · 17/02/2021 21:27

Goodness me, why would it be cheeky? The NHS is there as our health service, not some deity to be appeased lest you offend!

Weight is an integral part of our health.

Randominternetbitch · 17/02/2021 22:35

The nurse asked how tall I was when I had my smear test a couple of weeks ago but I wasn’t asked for my weight and wasn’t weighed. I wonder if the bed secretly weighed me whilst I was on it and she used my height to work out my BMI?🧐

faerin · 18/02/2021 00:58

Ughh I hate getting weighed when I get a smear done or have to pick up the pill. Sometimes they comment on if I gained or lost and I wish they didn't! Of course if there was any thing to really be concerned about like unhealthy gain or loss I wouldn't complain, but it just feels so stressful having someone talk about my weight! I think they might just weigh you without you having to ask, but I think if you did there would likely be no problem.

Akire · 18/02/2021 01:02

Do it! Most people’s home scales are not as accurate and anyone showing they want to check on their health should be encouraged. Play it is I’ve just lost 2 stone and want to check im keeping it off Grin
