Washing hands wouldn't be necessary if it's not transmissible other than airborne. Some outbreaks in NZ have been backwards traced to formite transmission and because they have so few cases and brilliant tracking & tracing (forwards & backwards) they can do this well. In the U.K. We have far too many cases to do this properly.
You are most likely to get it via large droplet direct transmission
Then secondly, airborne transmission - building up in the air & hanging around
Then formite transmission.
I prefer to keep my home 'free of COVID' so that I don't have to think about touching stuff or worry about touching my face.
So I get shopping delivered - non veg fridge stuff gets washed in dishwashing liquid, rinsed & dried. Vegetables get out in the large vegetable drawer and I wash my hands every time I get veg out of it. (I was washing it originally, but it wasn't lasting very well) everything else goes into the spare room & stays there until it's needed. As I keep a good store cupboard (always have) if on the rare occasion I need something it gets handled carefully appropriate to what it is.
I open parcels/post & tip them onto the table, dispose of the packaging, wash my hands & deal with the contents -mail is read then either dealt with or shoved in the quarantine box (aka to be filed when I can be arsed) wash hands again.
Then I don't need to even think about Covid inside my home. Other people Liu s don't think it's a big enough risk to bother with, that's up to them. But I have several underlying issues, so - to ME- it's worth it 🤷🏻♀️
