When do we think year 1 children can go back to school?

I know nobody knows and we're all just speculating and chances are even Boris doesn't yet know the answer but what do we think the chances of a year 1 child being allowed back in school on the 8th or soon after. I'm so worried about him socially. He just doesn't want to leave the house anymore and is quite withdrawn and just wants constant cuddles. Am so angry about him not being allowed to go to school (while his KW friends are) and how much this could affect him long term. He didn't get to go back last summer as our school couldn't accommodate year R at the time only year 1.

I also have a year 3 child and obviously ideally he will be back soon too but am less worried about him - still seems his normal self.

You've said yourself that no one knows, you'll either get guesses that are what you want to hear or guesses that aren't and will make you feel worse.
We find out in 5 days so just hold out til then.

I'm an infant teacher and I'm pretty sure we will be back on the 8th.

The 8th

Who are you angry at - the pandemic, the government or, hopefully not, the school? It's not about him not 'being allowed ' to go to school - schools are closed to most children and only open to allow the keyworker parents to work.
When schools went back in September, they planned for teaching children who had not been in school for 5-6 months, and they will do similar again, although the time out of school will have been significantly shorter this time.

I think it is pretty likely year 1 will be back 8th, not sure about older primary. My year 1 is my easier one so annoying but i get why they may want younger ones back first.

Eccle80 · 17/02/2021 12:34

I think if anyone goes back on the 8th it has the greatest chance of being years R and 1. I also think it is likely they will want to get at least some children back on the 8th. But nothing is certain!

OverTheRainbow88 · 17/02/2021 12:34

Maybe we could wait til Monday and see!

I think if any children will be going back on the 8th Y1 would be one of the first priorities. Especially as they are going back in Scotland and they seem to be a decent barometer.

I totally sympathise with your worry. My reception age child is similar at the minute, constantly wanting to touch and cuddle me, which is tricky as he has an 18mo brother who wants the same thing too. I think it's because the usual interactions they would have with other children would involve a lot of touch (and good natured roughhousing in my DS's case!) and because they aren't getting that physical stimulation they need to get it from someone else. He has also been very uncharacteristically angry and has started soiling himself Sad. Fingers crossed for everyone in our position.

Isn't the word all kids back in on the 8th?

If it is a staggered return, I do think younger children will be among the first back. Kids are resilient though, and I'm sure he will recover as things become more normal.

Idontwantarow · 17/02/2021 12:46

I think the 8th will be all of KS1

EduardoStobarto · 17/02/2021 12:48

I hope year 1 will be a priority, bearing in mind they have already missed half of reception. I'm simply not qualified to teach my child the basics of reading, writing and phonics, she really needs a teacher to do it, I have been trying my best but I know it's not the same as face to face teaching.
They are missing the very foundation of their learning and socialising with friends, my year 4 has been there done that so I'm not too worried about her but year 1 is so important especially after not completing a full reception year Sad

I am 95% sure years R and 1 will be back on March 8th in England even if no others are.

As pp has said I think they will want to make a start getting some children back and the evidence for in-school transmission seems to be lowest for the youngest while the negative affects of missing school are arguably the highest.

I am expecting either all of primary plus y11 and 13 or R, 1, 11 and 13.

Having a Y 1 myself alongside Y5, 7 and 10 the y 1 is definitely the one having the hardest time and is the worst suited for home learning when you take into account what they're supposed to be learning and how they learn at that age.

Indeed an just wondering if I should be hopeful or prepare myself for him not going back until after Easter.

We live in Wales. My ds is year 1 and my dd is in the school meithrin (she’s 4). They are both going back on Monday. I can’t see England being too far behind us.

Redtulipses · 17/02/2021 13:16

I hope all year groups go back to school on the 8th March in England.

Hi all, I am completely new here. : ) I have joined because I want to help parents whose children are struggling readers or have fallen behind with their sounds. I have a bilingual child who started school as the youngest in class and received extra help from the school staright away. It was actually brilliant and it had nothing to do with reading or sounds. It was helping her to talk in English. I know now that it is so important how many English words a child has come across by the time they start school. I am an English as a second language teacher myself but recently I have started to dig deeper into the realm of teaching reading. I was astonished by some of the things i have discovered....Anyway, this is getting long so I will stop. I am looking forward to having discussions with everybody. : )
