Is it illegal to protest at the moment?

Are we allowed to go on demonstrations and protest?

I haven’t said what I’d like to protest about.

Some of you are making assumptions.

I don’t think we’re interested, tbh. I know I’m not.
Mittens030869 · 16/02/2021 19:49

So your freedom to protest trumps people's health?

I do feel the same as you actually. I've been stuck at home for most of the last year, not because of lockdown but because of long Covid. This is a virus that can be dangerous, even to young and healthy people. (I'm not talking about deaths here but long Covid.)

I'm not saying that I think lockdown is a good thing. I can see how hard it's been on my DDs (11 and 8). But I'm optimistic that, with the vaccine rollout seemingly going really well, there will be an end to restrictions come summertime.

And then you'll be allowed to go on demos again. (You can protest in other ways in the meantime.)

In your first post you said "Is it illegal to go on a protest at the moment. Are we allowed to go on demonstrations and protest?". The assumption everyone has made is that you want to go on a demo, which right now is a) illegal and b) a bad idea

Nobody asked, because it doesn't matter. The reasons for not gathering at the moment remain the same.

dividedwefall · 16/02/2021 20:15

@Dustyboots

It is actually illegal. Does this not unnerve anyone?
Yes it unnerves lots of us. We have a great thread on our civil liberties being removed on this board.

You will get a sanctimonious verbal beating for not following the narrative and daring to ask how it is possible that protesting has become a crime but their arguments don't hold water.

Dustyboots · 16/02/2021 20:19

Thank you divided.

I’m close to protest OP, the destruction of everything in the name of covid has to stop. Quite frankly it isn’t justified anymore

Dustyboots · 16/02/2021 20:31

I’d perhaps like to protest about the government doing nothing to make schools safe.

Our kids are being robbed of an education due to the stubborn, closed minded refusal of our government to do anything but no school or full time unsafe school.

This should be fought but how do we do that if it’s illegal?

And please don't say "but what about looooooooooooong COVID?"

Charming. So my own experience of long Covid and that of others going through this don't matter?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/02/2021 20:44

It’s about numbers surely enough people that they can’t arrest everyone

Mittens030869 · 16/02/2021 20:49

Clearly only a minority of positive cases of Covid lead to death or long Covid, but the point is that long Covid doesn't affect octogenarians. It affects people who are young and healthy. So it is something that needs to be taken seriously.

But I'm not saying that lockdown should be prolonged any longer than necessary. With the vaccine rollout, there won't be any justification for it.

Hopefully children will be in school on 8th March. I agree with you that the government could have done a lot more to make schools safe, OP, and it's a cause worth protesting over.

I had looooooong fresher's flu at University. It took me over a year to get my strength back. It is called post viral fatigue and is not unique to COVID. I am really annoyed now that the whole of society wasn't closed down to prevent this happening to me.

Beaniecats · 16/02/2021 20:53

Long covid it's like a new buzz word isn't it

Long covid? Oh you mean post viral fatigue syndrome You know that's not a new thing right?
HeronLanyon · 16/02/2021 20:56

I was going to walk over to Euston to see the tunnel and what was going on generally and maybe hand over a tenner or something. In early days and all very I thought through but thkight what they are doing no is important and I live close by. . What stopped me was Covid and the thought i might be breaching something by being outside and half mile or So
From my house on foot for that reason. Then I was really troubled by that thkight.
There was another evening where something. Outrageous had happened and I though I’ll bet there are people at Downing Street - I’ll look on Twitter and maybe go over.
Feel passive and politically inert. Very unnerving.

Real enough for those who have it I would imagine.

ilovesooty · 16/02/2021 20:58

Post viral fatigue syndrome is not synonymous with long covid.

Mittens030869 · 16/02/2021 21:09

@Beaniecats

How do you know long Covid is the same thing as PVS? Have you had both? Or does it simply suit your narrative to insist that they're the same thing?

They're not the same, though. I've had PVS myself before, I had it after having pneumonia in 2019. It was complete exhaustion, yes, but I was symptom free, hence calling it Post Viral Syndrome.

With long Covid, the symptoms remained for months. I was still having a temperature five months after falling ill in the first place. I'm still having coughing fits producing phlegm. There are also other symptoms like brain fog and dizzy spells.

So no, it isn't the same. It was actually a relief to discover that long Covid is a thing, when I got to three months with no let-up in the symptoms at that stage and not understanding why the symptoms weren't going away.
