Can you pay to have the vaccine privately?

Not for me, as it happens I've had it because of my work, but I was musing on whether you can and how I'd stand on the morality that.

On the one hand, it seems outrageous to jump the queue like that, on the other you can jump the queue like that for most aspects of medical care, so why not this?

Eventually probably like you do flu jab
Not yet

dementedpixie · 16/02/2021 14:14

No, I don't think so

PilatesPeach · 16/02/2021 14:14

no you cannot in the UK it is not like the flu jab in that respect.

Ginisatonic · 16/02/2021 14:14

No you can’t. Which I’m really pleased about.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 16/02/2021 14:15

Not currently but I hope they allow it like flu vaccines so those that don’t want to risk getting very ill or worse have the chance of protection too.

The more vaccinated the more society gets the benefit.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 16/02/2021 14:16

No, and I think it’s right that you can’t.

PracticingPerson · 16/02/2021 14:17

No, because the limiting factor is supply so you can't buy a private vaccine without making another person wait.

With flu vaccine we have plenty but a clinical cost/benefit analysis determines we only vaccinate certain groups.

GoldenPenPot · 16/02/2021 14:21

Not currently.

Providing everyone has access to a vaccine on demand via the NHS, I’d have no problem with people paying for one (although not sure why you would).

Pyewhacket · 16/02/2021 14:22

I'm sure you can get Sputnik V, for a price.

KeepWashingThoseHands · 16/02/2021 14:25

Philosophically that might be the case in the future but how silly to think that is a sensible thing to do now.

In basic economics of supply and demand, it’s likely those who could pay for the vaccine aren’t the most needy, both as individuals nor the impact on the country/world as a whole. Governments intervene in economic policy where it benefits social welfare. You’re describing a situation where someone could normally pay privately - but that’s an individuals choice and unlikely to impact other people. Whilst demand massively outstrips supply, that won’t happen.

Not being registered with a GP, I won't be able to get it until it is available privately. I can't be the only one in this position.

TrainingAim · 16/02/2021 15:15

This seems to suggest people not registered with a GP will still get it.

theThreeofWeevils · 16/02/2021 15:22

...by registering with a GP (unless I have missed something in the article).

WaltzingTilda · 16/02/2021 15:46

I thought you could register with gp just for the purpose of the vaccine and nothing else? Surely if illegal immigrants are allowed to register solely for the purpose of getting the jab, then everyone else not registered should also be allowed to?

quietyear · 16/02/2021 15:57

People are getting it privately abroad. Plenty of the winter sun holiday destinations that the wealthy went to this winter had it available privately. Plus even though only essential travel is allowed right now, that doesn't stop private planes.

I also do wonder about some of the private clinics. One celebrity was pictured in a tabloid going into a rather bizarre and improbable private clinic last week (definitely not the kind of appointment a person would bother making in a pandemic at their age) and it made me wonder if they were getting a private vaccine ....

Juo · 16/02/2021 16:10

Yes you can fly to Dubai for it, though you'd have to quarantine on return in a hotel.
It was announced at the beginning that it would not be made available in the UK privately. I presume that will change when the population has been done once.

Fuckadoodledoooo · 16/02/2021 16:44

@theThreeofWeevils I've not been registered with a GP for 20 years, nor are my kids. We see a private gp and use insurance.

I know many people who are the same and don't want to register with an NHS gp.

There really should be a way you can book a vaccine (when it's your time) with your NHS number online.

starfish88 · 16/02/2021 16:59

I'm not sure it is as easy as flying to Dubai for it. Lots of expats have elderly family out here and can't get it without a residency visa (not just a visit visa) and ID card. There were rumours of places doing it but I haven't heard of anyone who has actually done it. The vaccine in Dubai is free and provided by the government to anyone with a residency visa but due to a surge in cases has now been prioritized for the elderly, people with certain conditions, certain professions as well as 2nd doses for people who had the first before the prioritization.

BlueTimes · 16/02/2021 17:02

It’s not available privately in England. Not yet, anyway.

quietyear · 16/02/2021 17:05

I think there was somewhere in the caribbean also doing private vaccinations?
