How to let my dad receive calls

My father was recently rushed into hospital in Cardiff (the university hospital). I made up a box of clothes, personal items and a phone for him. As I am not allowed into the hospital I had to drop it off outside. By the time the box got to him the phone was stolen.

How can I talk to my father? Is there any system to allow incoming calls? He is bedridden so can’t walk currently.

Could PALS help you?

Could PALS help you?

What can they do?

I know you shouldn't have to, and its a bit of a crap thing to have the phone stolen, but I would get a cheap as you can find PayG from supermarket or argos and try and drop it off.

Many hospitals have bedside phones attached to the TVs, but they're so expensive that it's probably going to end more expensive than option 1 after a few days.

I would definitely get in touch with PALS, they probably won't be able to help directly with a new phone, but they may be able to start an investigation into how the theft occurred, and, in some hospitals have been able to provide tablets etc for face time.

They may be able to help you with getting him access to a phone, or getting a phone to him.

My Dad was in hospital with pneumonia and he also suffered from dementia they were really helpful.

May be worth a try.

When you ring the ward, you can ask if it’s possible to speak to him. They usually have a phone just for this with a separate number. Tell him about the stolen phone.

2 years ago when my mother in law was in hospital, her phone was there, but no sim card in it.

That's what I did! But it was still 40 quid for the phone and 20 quid for the phone credits. I don't care about the money but I can't see how the same thing won't happen again if I try to drop another phone off.

Call the number and ask the answerer to drop it off? Post a replacement which might arrive on the ward? Ime phone signals are patchy at best and bedside phones not connected. Will the ward allow your ddad to arrange to call you/nok if you speak to them.

PALS is the contact you need. Call the one in your dads hospital.

Another one here saying pals. If you dropped the box off with a member of nhs staff then they should be able to track its journey and find out about the phone. This should not have happened and I would be raising this! They will also speak to the ward to help facilitate contact. A relative of mine was in hospital in wales. We are his only family. After struggling to get any form of contact we went through pals. They spoke to the ward and then we were able to facetime him every couple of days.

Thank you. I will try pals.
