Staggered start to school not ruled out

I have just seen this in the Guardian. It seems that the initial excitement about everyone being back on the 8th might be a little premature. I would not be surprised if it was rolled out gently with certain year groups going back first.

Wouldn't surprise me. Last year when school reopening for the last term was announced our school crammed full of as many key workers as they could find so no room for anyone else.. until September. Expecting the same again. If the government say half the school, our school will fill that with key worker families and everyone else can stuff even if in a priority year group.

It caused loads of problems in January where everyone they'd encouraged to take a place in May then wanted one again.

@AllTheWayFromLondonDAMN

Fuck me, I feel like I’m surrounded by idiots today. Secondary teacher with ST husband here, in the worst hit London Borough the month before Christmas. They reckon 60% of our community spread was in secondary schools between the end of November and when term ended. That was what caused the record breaking cases and deaths in January.

I’ve got two infant aged kids. We are all fed up. I miss my family and my friends and it’s awful. But anyone who’s pushing for schools to all reopen immediately on March 8th is adding to this media circus that will end up driving the government. Please stop. Staggered starts and blended learning make sense, will benefit the kids and all of us because long term that will be what stops us being back here again. Support that so that the government don’t get edgy like they did before.

Well said.

DH reckons that the Tory pressure group pushing for end of lockdown has released false information to the papers - in order to rush BJ into sending schools back etc

Papers have picked it up and run with it - not caring whether it's true or not.

Could this be where this bullshit nonsense has come from?

We suspect similar in this house.

But you never really know which of the warring Tory factions fed it to a sympathetic journalist.

These leaks could just as often originate in number 10.

Cheesecats · 16/02/2021 01:46

@Rasclut

Guardian loves lockdown. When daily mail or telegraph report that it's time to worry as those are boris's pet papers.
The Guardian are literally quoting Boris!
Ahmnotacat · 16/02/2021 01:49

I hope Boris has the balls to stand up to the daft minority in his government who are so determined to undermine him and undermine all of our sacrifices. And potentially the entire vaccination programme.

Good call. He could be spot on. The papers just want sales, clicks and shares so will lap it up. Might even be those closer to Boris ruffling feathers and putting pressure on him (Sunak, who wants easing; Gove who probably doesn’t but would love to be pm and has Murdoch links)

Same here. I’d actually have some respect for him if he did.

There’s no pleasing them. They shouted loudly as the erg. They shout loudly as the crg. And after all this is over they’ll find something else to shout about.

He needs to show some leadership and put them in their place.

Monkeytennis97 · 16/02/2021 01:58

The crg can go to hell as far as I'm concerned. Irresponsible vile self serving men.

Cautious staggered approach is the only way.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 16/02/2021 02:12

I really hope it is staggered
It's the only thing that makes any sense to me

Why on earth would you hit the whole thing at once vs dipping a toe in the water and monitoring?

KS1 primary and exam years secondary and then KS2 primary and other secondary years would be my suggestion (not to my own advantage but because that makes sense)

I would actually support a blended approach. I wish my kids could have some days in with friends and to do practical subjects but I am happy for them to have online lessons on other days and reduce the numbers in school until more people are vaccinated and cases are properly low.

I have been really surprised to hear all the talk of all back on 8th March. It seems such a stupid risk to take for a matter of a few more weeks.

Same.

Steve Baker and Sunak et al having tantrums has killed enough British people.

Country before the ERG, please.

Agreed.

Unless of course we want more lockdowns and more death - in which case listen to the bloody ERG and throw it all open at once.

Because their way absolutely guarantees Lockdown 4.

(Are the ERG members incapable of learning from experience? Lacking in understanding? Or do they just not give a shiny shite how many of our children's grandparents die?)

PrincessNutNuts · 16/02/2021 02:52

It would be certifiably insane @CovoidOfAllHumanity

(If the definition of insanity is still doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result. )

Mrstumbletap · 16/02/2021 10:21

@Ahmnotacat very true. It would undermine the whole vaccine programme.

The vaccinations that have taken place are fantastic, but they have all been over 70. 70year old are not in schools.

We have vaccinated everyone that stays at home anyway during a lockdown, everyone that should be staying away from family, keeping safe. This isn't going to make a difference to infection rates, we 30/40/50 year olds, that are out and at work are the ones spreading it.

As soon as you put all the 30/40/50 year olds with asthma, with low immune systems, that have had chemo, that have heart/lung problems, that are overweight, back into a work place with nearly 2000 students and 190 staff without masks. The problems will come back.

Mrstumbletap · 16/02/2021 10:31

Remember this is what schools are like

Staggered start to school not ruled out
Staggered start to school not ruled out
Staggered start to school not ruled out
noblegiraffe · 16/02/2021 10:34

The right wing press aren’t being used by the CRG to put pressure on Boris, they’re part of the group of people putting pressure on Boris to dismantle lockdown.

Anti lockdown papers putting anti lockdown stories on the front pages trying to swing public opinion.

Lottie4 · 16/02/2021 10:43

I work in a school and they're assuming it's more like to be just certain years or on a rota - they really want years 2 and 3 back in as they believe they've missed lots of essential basics which will be hard to catch up on. Time will tell. As Boris said last night they are constantly looking at the figures and this time around they don't want to rush into easing lockdown and finding we have another wave.

Rasclut · 16/02/2021 11:32

Now they are worried about the strain 'linked to travel from Nigeria' Hmm I dont understand why they find the African and Chinese variants more scary then their 'Kent' variant?

I know!

They need to have a chat with Israel. They're looking plenty worried enough about the Kent variant.
