Excellent shame we’re not using 100% mRNA vaccines here.

doireallyneedaname · 15/02/2021 11:58

@Oaktree55 I agree, though it’s an unpopular opinion round here!

Fantastic news! I suspect that once the whole adult population is vaccinated (mostly with AZ) and boosted for next winter, there will be another round of mRNA vaccinations done to give really good immunity. Maybe next summer, if supplies allow?

It really is amazing technology.

DoctorYang · 15/02/2021 12:23

I received the Pfizer, quite glad now.

Haenow · 15/02/2021 12:26

Out of interest, is there a breakdown of how many people have received Pfizer vs Oxford/AZ? I heard someone say the Pfizer Vaccine had been administered the most but anecdotally, everyone I know had the AZ.
TheKeatingFive · 15/02/2021 12:26

Great news

veryverydrunk · 15/02/2021 12:35

I would only be happy getting the Pfizer if it was 3 weeks apart not 12

Though I have already had Covid so am hoping that one vaccine of either sort will act like a booster and give me protection

Myalternate · 15/02/2021 12:40

Please could someone tell me the efficacy rates for the Pfizer vaccine if the 2nd dose is delayed to a 12 week interval?

MrsMauryBallstein · 15/02/2021 12:40

Moderna is mRNA (I think) but we've only ordered 17m doses and it isn't arriving until April. Novavax isn't mRNA. We seem principally to be relying on AZ (over 100m doses ordered) which means that boosters/tweaked shots will be required in autumn. I'm afraid I can't help thinking that, in view of SA variant. we've backed the wrong horse but hope I am wrong.

veryverydrunk · 15/02/2021 12:45

yes, the mutant variants are a real concern. I read of somewhere trying to develop a universal vaccine to cover any mutations, that would be fantastic if possible.

Agree that would be fantastic. Especially if current ones get us through summer and this gets rolled out in winter.

I've been wondering if there's any details about this yet.
GoldenPenPot · 15/02/2021 12:58

Great news! I’ll take any vaccine offered but would prefer the Pfizer. Brilliant technology.

Frazzled2207 · 15/02/2021 13:08

If close to 30 million of us eventually get an mRNA vaccine which is possible with 40m Pfizer jabs and 17m Moderna on order, then that should be enough to make a massive difference to transferability regardless of what you got personally.

CoffeeandCroissant · 15/02/2021 13:10

@Haenow

Looking at the vaccine deployment plan that the Scottish government published, up to yesterday the number of doses that were scheduled to be delivered was:

AstraZeneca: 821,600
Pfizer: 885,300

So extrapolating that pro-rata should give figures for the whole of the UK with a similar ratio?

However delivery schedules may have changed since the document was published last month, as clearly Scotland have not vaccinated 1.7 million people to date, which is what was due to be delivered by now.

Going forward, the document shows much higher numbers scheduled to be delivered by AstraZeneca than for Pfizer, so the majority of people in groups 1 to 9 will have had the AstraZeneca vaccine by the time the rollout is complete.

Oaktree55 · 15/02/2021 13:11

@Haenow no I don’t think the breakdown of who has had which vaccine is available publicly in U.K. unfortunately. I know the benefits of Oxford for us has been speed of rollout but I know what we’ll all be getting in our arms next year!

Oaktree55 · 15/02/2021 13:15

If anyone is interested this account (run by a scientist who works for Moderna) provides excellent communication to lay re latest vaccine updates etc.

Sorry, should say: Going forward, the document shows much higher numbers scheduled to be delivered by AstraZeneca than for Pfizer, so the majority of people in groups 1 to 9 will have had the AstraZeneca vaccine by the time that part of the rollout is complete (ie: groups 1 to 9).

3littlewords · 15/02/2021 13:18

From everyone i know who's been vaccinated there is around a 50/50 split in the Pfizer and AZ with most of them being vaccinated at the same place (mass vaccination hub) I can only assume they use whichever vaccine they have been supplied with that day

Thanks. I have had a quick look.

Looks promising. Pzfier is looking good against the new variants for south Africa. It's good to get information from a scientist rather than the click bait articles and the daily fail.

CoffeeandCroissant · 15/02/2021 15:31

As of 31 January, an estimated 6.6 million first doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and 3 million doses of the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine had been administered, and around 0.5 million second doses, mostly the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, had been administered.

The estimated number of doses administered differs from the estimated number of people vaccinated due to the different data sources used.
www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-vaccine-adverse-reactions/coronavirus-vaccine-summary-of-yellow-card-reporting

So approx 71% Pfizer up to 31 January 2021.
