Learning disabilities, death rates and DNRs (again)

How in the fuck is this happening again?

And 18-34 year olds with learning disabilities 30x more likely to die from COVID than those without. Given this, surely those with learning disabilities should be prioritised for the vaccine.

I’m so angry about this.

There are some excellent healthcare professionals but the systemic discrimination within healthcare filters down, albeit maybe subconsciously. Your comment ”Whilst in my experience people with learning disabilities DO get excellent healthcare” is not a statement I’ve heard from people with LD, their families, their carers or other professionals. Of course some people have praised some care but as a whole, it is below the acceptable standard. Research backs this up. ”The Confidential Inquiry into the premature deaths of people with learning disabilities (CIPOLD) reported that for every person in the general population who died from a cause of death amenable to good quality care, three people with learning disabilities would do so.“

@Haenow
The link you’ve provided doesn’t seem to report any actual findings, it tells us that someone is carrying out an investigation. The part you’ve quoted doesn’t say that the increased death rate is down to inadequate health care. Unless I’m missing something, there’s nothing in the link that backs up your assertion.

As a large part of my career has been spent supporting children with a wide range of additional needs, mostly learning disabilities, I have a good idea of what carers and other professionals think about the health provision for their children, and it has, overwhelmingly, been positive.

LeDeR well known national programme. Well, it certainly should be known by health and social care professionals who have regular contact with people who have learning disabilities. I have extensive experience of working in health and social care with older children and adults with LD. Covid has raised some uncomfortable truths. DNACPR being sent to otherwise healthy young adults with learning disabilities and lack of mental capacity act assessments for consent to the Covid vaccine are just two (huge!) current issues.

This is the inquiry; www.bristol.ac.uk/media-library/sites/cipold/migrated/documents/fullfinalreport.pdf

This is what the NHS has to say; ”People with a learning disability often have poorer physical and mental health than other people and may face barriers to accessing health and care to keep them healthy. Too many people with a learning disability are dying earlier than they should, many from things which could have been treated or prevented.” Link is www.england.nhs.uk/learning-disabilities/improving-health/mortality-review/

This is shocking.
I agree that disability rights is not as trendy as other causes unfortunately.

Mrspimplepopper · 19/02/2021 21:59

Im an icu nurse, A DNR does not mean no treatment!! We fight to save people with a DNR. We don't give up

x2boys · 19/02/2021 22:12

The point is that a lot of people with learning disabilities are as physically healthy as the next person and they should not be given a DNR just because they have learning disabilities their life is worth just as much as anyone's @@Mrspimplepopper ,a DNR should be issued in clinical need learning disabilities are irrelevant

Kitewoman · 20/02/2021 09:27

but it still stands that people can get a DNR just because of learning disabilities even though they are physically healthy. Do you agree with this, MrsPimple? Your post doesn't imply you disagree.

Haenow · 20/02/2021 11:42

@Mrspimplepopper

So, why are otherwise healthy people with learning disabilities being sent DNACPR forms? I cannot condone this.

Just bumping because I think this is exceptionally important. While various posters express their feelings at schools being opened, lets have some awareness for the most vulnerable. People with learning disabilities are still not vaccinated!

Kitewoman · 22/02/2021 16:29

haenow, most posters don't have a family member with intellect disabilities and frankly couldn't care less. there are next to no threads about this issue as opposed to a million school threads. The only one who post here are family members/parents of someone affected.

Athinginitself · 22/02/2021 20:30

Am feeling very happy that my sister is booked in for her vaccination on Sunday. Interestingly she had her yearly LD health check today and the nurse said she wanted to see her in person if we felt we could go in and said in their group of practices they are vaccinating everyone recorded with a LD regardless of severity which is positive.

wonderstuff · 22/02/2021 20:33

Just read on Twitter that all adults with learning disabilities in Scotland will be in group 6.

@Kitewoman

I know :( but it’s appalling. If there was a great injustice - like this one - affecting a group of people, I’d like to think I would show some care and give it attention. I’m aware everyone cannot support every cause but people with learning disabilities often aren’t heard.
