Would you go to the Drs right now if it meant getting the vaccine sooner?

I hadn’t really considered that I would be in any priority groups for the Covid vaccine.

Since having my son I’ve gained a lot of weight on top of already being very, very overweight.

I’ve not really done much about it, new mum, knackered.... (excuses, I know)
But after reading online about obesity and Covid i decided to weigh myself and see what the damage was.

It wasn’t great and my BMI was coming in at 40.5.. Blush

I made a call to my GP and they’ve requested that I go in so they can run some bloods, blood pressure and officially update my records with my weight and BMI.

The Dr told me that with my BMI that would make me group 6 for the Covid vaccine.

The issue is, I’m absolutely petrified about going to the Drs.

My mum went a few days ago, she said they have a maximum of 4 people in the waiting room, all distanced.
Staff are in PPE.

I avoid public places like super markets etc, and I’m not sure if I can bring myself to go to the Drs.

I’ve asked if they can update my details over the phone but my last recorded weight gave me a BMI of 31 so the GP said she is concerned by this big jump and wants me to go in.

Will the Drs & nurses be vaccinated now and do they test regularly?

I don’t know what to do. I feel like going there could put me at risk and I’m likely to catch Covid.
But then it also puts me into the right category for the vaccine.

What should I do?

Do you think if I wear two masks that will offer me more protection?

It’s not the staff that puts me off. My mum went last week and said they allow a total of 4 people in the waiting room.

They will all be well spread out and a total of 4, doesn't mean that there will definitely be another 3 there waiting at the same time as you.
Like others have said, you can ask to wait in the car park, I'm sure they won't mind. Our surgery has a window that they "check" patients in, before you can go in, so you could easily ask to wait outside if it's similar.

ssd · 11/02/2021 10:44

@overtherainbow08, can you ask 8f the dr would vaccinate you in the car, eg roll your window down, dr stands outside, gives you the jag, job done. I think a dr would do this, considering how anxious you feel Flowers

covetingthepreciousthings · 11/02/2021 10:45

It might be a good practice run to go to the doctors incase you can have the Covid vaccine sooner, it will prepare you, as like others have mentioned, you do have to sit amongst others (socially distanced) when you have it & if it's the Pfizer you have to wait for 15 mins after.

halcyondays · 11/02/2021 10:45

I would definitely go.

ssd · 11/02/2021 10:45

Dr not 8f good grief

overtherainbow08 · 11/02/2021 10:46

Thanks all. I can’t cope living like this for much longer. I’m absolutely petrified.

Please go, you’ll be doing the right thing by your son.

Ginfordinner · 11/02/2021 10:48

Please try and not let your anxiety take over common sense. Doctors are only seeing people that they feel they really have to. Clearly your weight is a concern and I suspect that the blood pressure check and blood test are for preventative or monitoring treatment.

Your anxiety won't go away if you don't go.

Phyzzy · 11/02/2021 10:49

I am CEV and wore two masks for my vaccination appointment. Nearly suffocated but got jabbed Grin

Even those shielding are told to attend medical appointments. I have had dozens over the last year including for cancer treatment. You should go.

DianaT1969 · 11/02/2021 10:50

Perhaps the GP suspects diabetes if you gained a lot of weight fairly fast. I understand your dilemma. I would ask for the first appointment of the day, so there's less chance of Covid hanging in the air. Do you know if they can give the vaccine on the same visit? Worth asking in advance. Then you are not exposing yourself twice. Presumably you are under 45 as you mention a new baby. Age is on your side.

I’m group 6 for the vaccine, and as far as I’m aware they haven’t started vaccinating group 6.

My understanding was that they are still doing groups 1-4?

Definitely go - I have done similar (and the blood test.)

To be honest diabetes/ etc is more likely to kill us than covid. But after a year of being extremely careful its covid that's in our mind.

So it really is important to get the blood test (I get results in a week...)

overtherainbow08 · 11/02/2021 11:03

I’ve booked the appointment. 9.10 in the morning.

Go !! It's very unlikely you'll pick it up there. They have protocols in place. Wear a good, well fitting mask. Not the flimsy blue ones. Wear a white N95 or similar. Make sure it fits tightly around your face and has no big gaps. Wear a face shield too if it makes you feel better. Dispose of the mask properly after has- sanitise your hands, take the mask off by the loops (do not touch the mask at all other than at the loops ) and throw it away immediately.

Group 6 here London- if anyone is wondering. I received my text already inviting me for the jab.

Pink happy any need for that like ? Op is nervous enough. It's highly highly unlikely that's where your friend caught it!!!!

Realitea · 11/02/2021 11:07

I’ve had blood tests, dr’s appointments, X-rays and next an MRI! Not worried at all, it’s a lot safer than going to the supermarket.
If you’re worried about the waiting room, you could just wait outside and they call your mobile when it’s your turn to go in. That was an option at my doctors surgery
They are also tested weekly and see very few patients compared to before.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 11/02/2021 11:08

Seconding anyone who suggests that you should attend and make sure that you're double-masked.

And they know this for certain how, exactly?

🙄 ignore, OP. Surgeries are very safe, they’ve been doing this for a long time now.

SlopesOff · 11/02/2021 11:12

@overtherainbow08

They are doing group 6 where I live.

Oblomov21 · 11/02/2021 11:14

Do you really need to ask? Get your anxiety sorted whilst you're at the GP's aswell!

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 11/02/2021 11:15

Im group 6 so not doug it here yet but if this appointment gets OP into group 6 it will be well worth it.

Good idea to ask about your anxiety as well.
