Would you see your parents if jabbed ?

We are KW, but next week there isn't school for DS as it's half term. My parents had their jabs today. Do you think if we saw them at the end of half term we would be low risk ( and not mixing or working next week) and they would of been jabbed a week? My DH has twice weekly Covid tests at work and doesn't really get close to anyone, has to wear mask all day and I WFH, but DS been at KW school. Would you risk it ?

My parents are both 70 and no particular issues although lockdown has slowed them down a bit , both heathy and not overweight.

No because it's against lockdown rules and if everybody has such a laissez faire attitude we'll be right back where we were at the start of the year..it is not "one rule for you" and another for everyone else.

TeeBee · 10/02/2021 17:33

It takes around 3 weeks for the vaccine to be effective. But no, I wouldn't anyway until restrictions are lifted.

Pillowcase123 · 10/02/2021 17:34

No. I dont think I'm more special than anyone else though

FuzzyPuffling · 10/02/2021 17:36

The vaccines take around three weeks to provide some level of immunity, so seeing them after a week is
a) against the rules
b) the same as seeing them with no vaccine.

Bmidreams · 10/02/2021 17:37

Definitely not before the 3 weeks. They could still pass it to you even after this time.

gratitutesmynewthing · 10/02/2021 17:40

When's the Easter holidays then? Do you think we will be let out then?

OP posts:
rookiemere · 10/02/2021 17:41

I'll be going to see mine soon. Got their first jab more than 3 weeks ago, cases in our area and theirs are low. We've been working from home and hardly seeing anyone. Figure it makes sense to go whilst DS is still off school.

FuzzyPuffling · 10/02/2021 17:42

Easter is April 4th.

The top 9 priority groups are supposed to be vaccinated (first dose only) by the end of April, so probably not.

pinkhappy · 10/02/2021 17:42

It is tricky. My parents had the jab more than 3 weeks ago and really want to see me. If I had it and 3 weeks passed I think the pressure would be unbearable.

PinkDaffodil2 · 10/02/2021 17:42

I would hold on for Easter holidays (when hopefully rule of 6 outdoors or similar will apply) as their vaccines will offer some protection by then, but none next week.

Melodiouschimes · 10/02/2021 17:43

I'm thinking about going to see them in their garden when it's legal.

gratitutesmynewthing · 10/02/2021 17:45

I WFH and I am literally so desperate for a change of scenery. I walk to school and walk the dog, but I don't see or speak to anyone all day. I work for NHS, but the nature of my job is important admin, but no meetings very little phone contact etc.

I found an elderly relative living in awful conditions in their home. I don't think I'm more special than anyone else but I'm so glad something made me check on them. I wouldn't have had a clue that they were struggling from our conversations. They hid it well...until I went into their home and what I found was devastating.
Some of us have had 11 months of this and people's mental health is declining massively. People's medical conditions are also going unmanaged for various reasons. There must be so many people falling through the cracks now... And I'm making a point of listening very carefully to what friends and relatives are saying and if there's any shadow of a doubt I will do a care visit.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 10/02/2021 17:47

We could go and see my mum and grandad as grandad has terminal cancer . Both have had the jabs. I'm going to go and wave at them from the bottom of their drive later and have a chat but I won't be going in the house

Cloudsurfing · 10/02/2021 17:48

No as it takes at least two weeks to have any effect so they wouldn’t be protected next week.

gratitutesmynewthing · 10/02/2021 17:51

It's just too far between us distance wise, to just stay in the garden, so can't do that or a walk. I'll hold off until Easter. Might try to find a friend to walk with.

@Buzzinwithbez oh must of been Intuition. I hope they are doing ok now.

Of course not - you need to wait 22 days for the vaccination to be effective. This has been publicised since the 30th December! How do people not know this??
GintyMcGinty · 10/02/2021 17:53

With you being key workers I would wait the full 3 weeks and give them a chance to build up their immunity.

RedskyBynight · 10/02/2021 17:56

No. It's still illegal. It's illegal because we are trying to minimise contacts to avoid spread of the virus, and there is still not definitive evidence about how the vaccine affects transmission.

Buzzinwithbez · 10/02/2021 18:07

Thankyou. Long slog ahead but we caught it just in time.

buckeejit · 10/02/2021 18:10

My dad got vaccinated on Saturday past. My mum earlier in the week. 2 weeks from this Saturday we will be at their house for a little tea party. They're not really seeing anyone & unless someone can explain why this situation is medium-high risk, I can't wait to do something so normal & to see my children bond with their grandparents again

BeautifulStar · 10/02/2021 18:12

I’m waiting til 3 weeks after their second jab to be safe. Also we are homeschooling and working from home so haven’t been anywhere to pick up the virus. I’d wait until Easter I think.

purplebagladylovesgin · 10/02/2021 18:13

No, they need 21 days clear before cautiously mixing. Protect them. You also need 21 days to be a lower risk to them.

user1471588124 · 10/02/2021 18:32

If people that are vaccinated start mixing even though its illegal because they're no longer at risk its a bit of a slap in the face to those of us who were low risk all along but were told it was selfish if we didnt follow the rules imo.
