Just read this on Facebook this morning.

I thought they were pushing for people to book holidays in this country to boost the economy this year?
It sounds as though he’s saying it’s illegal to book a holiday, even in this country. This statement makes me worry that this summer will be worse than last...how can it be with the vaccines? Unless they know something we don’t.

Really made me feel sad seeing this today Sad

Grant Shapps could interfere with my holiday plans any day of the week. He’s no Matt Hancock though.

emmskie03 · 10/02/2021 12:09

I'm sure these little comments by the Government are entirely so when things do go wrong because of their incompetence they can say "well, we did tell you so".

Nothing is ever remotely solid. It's not based on an actual plan or roadmap, it's just random soundbites, with a conflicting comment a bit later so all angles are covered. Basically they have no faith on themselves, everything is up in the air and its entirely possible that holidays might be back on but also entirely possible that the government will throw a covid party in June ignoring all scientists and creating a brand mutation all of their own.

Delatron · 10/02/2021 12:09

If you wait there’ll be nothing left in the school holidays. Especially if abroad is off the cards! Everything is getting booked up already.

So he can whistle basically...

peboh · 10/02/2021 12:11

It's upsetting news.
My friend has her wedding booked in Greece in June, it was booked before the pandemic and with the vaccines there was such hope for her that it would still go ahead. She's devastated.
It's frustrating that they're continually moving the goal posts.

toocold54 · 10/02/2021 12:21

I don't know why they just say - no holidays this year - do people really need a holiday every year? Most people I know have one every 3-4 years.

Would it not be better to open things up but people stay in their local area?

It's ridiculous that the UK which is an island has so many cases and people can't go to work or school or the local pub round the corner but can then drive 400miles to go on holiday for a week. It's just going to keep us in lockdown for even longer!

HairyFloppins · 10/02/2021 12:27

Yes I need 3-4 holidays a year not one every 3-4 years. I live for my holidays and spend months planning them. Everyone is different, thank god.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/02/2021 12:30

Well of course no-one needs a holiday every year, but despite what most people you know do, most people probably have one at least every year and many often more. We also usually go away 3-4 times a year most years.

I take it you don't do anything in life beyond the basic essentials?

user1487194234 · 10/02/2021 12:31

Holidays are very important to us
People are different and if other people don’t want to go on holiday that’s fine for them

We normally go abroad 3 times a year, obviously we can’t do that

If it is legal for us to go on holiday we will be going

Delatron · 10/02/2021 12:33

Yep! Life is for living. If we can afford it we go away at least 3-4 times. Great for the kids too. It’s something I’m happy to spend money on.

What? Every 4 years ain't normal. We have been really skint but managed to go away even if it was a wowcher haven deal for less than £100.

I am sick of my local area. Everything has started closing down for good so we'll be left with the same local parks we've been trudging round for a year. Yayyyy freedom.

Again, rather be dead.

ILookAtTheFloor · 10/02/2021 12:37

I just can't see how this summer can be worse than last summer, so we've booked a week in a caravan in Cornwall in August. The price was eye watering. We never go abroad anyway, my passport has been expired for years.

I doubt Shapps knows much, he's just managing expectations I think.

toocold54 · 10/02/2021 12:37

I'd love to go on holiday every year but most people can't afford to do that.

But why should us peasants get annoyed at following the rules for a year and wanting to take our DCs to local attractions without the risk of catching/spreading a virus, when there are more important people in the world who need their 3-4 holidays this year!

I don't think that's true. I would say most people go more often than every 4 years.

I'm glad you have local attractions because everything round here can't afford to 're open!

Iamclearlyamug · 10/02/2021 12:40

@vera99

is a twat....
Basically 😂😂
Delatron · 10/02/2021 12:41

Most people go on holiday more than once every 3-4 years.

Caramel81 · 10/02/2021 12:44

We have a week in Dorset booked for June which was rescheduled from last summer. Really hoping it can go ahead but it will be a bit rubbish if restaurants and pubs etc are still closed. Praying for a lot of restrictions to be lifted by then.

NotMeNoNo · 10/02/2021 12:45

By Holiday every 3-4 years do you mean an expensive package abroad (several £000) or literally any week or weekend away even camping/Butlins?

megletthesecond · 10/02/2021 12:46

I guessed could have more restrictions this summer to prevent a repeat of this winter.
Vaccinations will help but we need to minimise mixing to really get the virus under control and reduce mutations.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 10/02/2021 12:55

all viruses mutate - it's what they do

toocold54 · 10/02/2021 12:57

I'm glad you have local attractions because everything round here can't afford to 're open!

But this is why I am frustrated.

Schools and workplaces are closed, shops, pubs, local attractions etc are closing down because they can't afford to stay open yet there are loads of people planning to go away to a different country/part of the country and spend their money there - wouldn't it be better to spend your money in your local area?

I want things to re-open permanently but I can't see that happening if people are traveling freely.
Why not re-open everything apart from accommodation places so everyone can travel but only within an hour or 2s, drive so we are not spreading things unnecessarily and schools etc can remain open. Because if things re-open in summer we will end up being in lockdown again by Autumn which isn't fair.

Lollipop1234 · 10/02/2021 12:57

@whatswithtodaytoday

We don't know what's going to happen with the new variants - if the vaccines don't work well enough against them we will have to wait for a new version of the vaccine to be manufactured. AZ have said this can be done for the autumn.

We just have to wait until the data is available, and hope very much that the vaccines have enough of an effect that restrictions can be loosened.

But last summer they had no vaccine at all, and still opened things up.

Surely we can go away in the uk in household groups and go to pubs/ cafes etc with distancing in place like last year, which would be better than nothing?

What I'm saying is there's nothing to spend money on. The town centre is desolate. There wasn't much to spend money on before and there certainly isn't now.

I don't know what you expect us to do? Not go elsewhere in the hope some multi millionaire comes and opens loads of attractions?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/02/2021 13:11

As there's sod all to do here I'd much rather spend my money somewhere else.

Circumlocutious · 10/02/2021 13:12

Yes I’m sure the kids love a holiday abroad. I’m pretty sure their right to an education and to everyday social interaction is even more important.

Deux · 10/02/2021 13:21

He’s not saying it’s illegal to book a holiday, he’s saying it would be illegal to go on holiday right now.

I caught part of a Saga cruises radio advert this morning and they stated that everyone had to be vaccinated with 2 doses before they could travel and they would require proof to be shown.
