How has my 1 year old got coronavirus?

My 1 year old has covid, but no one else does. We have been at home all year, haven't even been shopping. Barely go for walks.

How could he have caught it 😢

Are you shielding? I had it a few weeks ago and my partner didn’t even though we still shared a bed, it’s funny how it works. Could you have had it and just been asymptomatic?

ZoBo123 · 10/02/2021 11:43

A nurse came round your house (and probably lots of others) but COVID came from the post, okay

How could he have got a positive result from the nurse swabbing him? It doesn’t work like that.

The nurse came to do the test. The nurse didn't pass it to the one year old, then swab them and it show positive Confused
ZoBo123 · 10/02/2021 11:48

Cross contamination of samples is way more likely than the post

ZoBo123 · 10/02/2021 11:50

Or even miss labelling the last persons sample. Human error is still possible and I would have thought likely in this case.

Thebizz · 10/02/2021 11:55

Do you have a partner/husband? Where have they been?

The fact you are all coughing and there’s a positive case in your house suggests you have it too?

MissDollyMix · 10/02/2021 11:56

My friend took her son for a test at the drive through centre. He has ASD and screamed and kicked off to such an extent that she couldn’t swab him, and put the swab back into the sample pot etc and handed it back as if the test had been completed. His test came back positive. Obviously there is a tiny margin for error. I agree though it’s more likely either you or your dh has a false negative. Hope everyone feels better soon!

Ladyellow · 10/02/2021 11:56

This is directly from ONS website “The rate of false positives PCR test results has been estimated at between 0.8% and 4.3%”. So in this case because of the level of precaution you have taken, and you personally have had 3 negative tests,I think your sons’s test is a false positive. Seems more likely than contaminated shopping and especially post ( very, very unlikely). Also false positive more likely if another virus is present. Hope he gets his new appointment soon.

It's very strange. Covid or not, the reason for all of you to be coughing must surely be something infectious (unless you all share an allergy)

Katie517 · 10/02/2021 12:14

It’s a false positive for sure. Why not just arrange another test? Also are you vulnerable? If not why haven’t you left the house or sent your other child to school for a year? That’s not healthy or normal.

A hospital stay, a shop... it's a virus and it's out there in the world. I am so sorry for your little one. How worrying.
But it is a mysterious virus. I find it odd that my DH was in ICU for two weeks on a CPAP. Yet I have tested negative in that time period, twice. And I had to look after him at home, cleaning up his vomit and poo (tmi), while his body totally succumbed to covid. It was awful. Yet our 3 kids and I remained well. I had a dry cough and a tight chest for two nights, heart palpitations, and that was it. Negative test. Fine and dandy (apart from nearly dying of anxiety and worry over DH). Really, really weird. I am left with more questions than answers.
DH is a frontliner, so getting covid was no mystery and always a possibility. Still, he wore full PPE and got covid from a patient. He's not on the hospital frontline but a GP in a surgery, seeing face to face patients still. But oddly, after not getting it from DH, I am more worried about getting it from being out and about in the shops or even walks among people.
May your little one recover quickly and fully. Flowers

TheVanguardSix · 10/02/2021 12:28

OP, I wanted to add, I'd put my money on your hospital stay. How long was it for? I mean, that over a 'contaminated' Amazon delivery package would make far more sense. I doubt it's a false positive. Like I said, 4 of us were negative while DH ended up in hospital with covid. He sure wasn't a false positive. He was just a textbook nightmare case, the one we all worry about experiencing but for the most part don't, fortunately.

howthefuck · 10/02/2021 12:39

Just to clarify a few things

My daughter hasn't been at school this year, as in January when no school children went back.

The hospital stay hasn't happened- the test was in preparation for this.

No one has left the house this year (except short walks) because we knew my sons appointment was upcoming and it's important that we were clear to go.

We are not shielding but my DPs BMI is 50, I have a health issue (a cough can you believe!) that is being investigated, and my son has something undiagnosed, so I just am doing all I can to keep us safe.
And just to clarify about the health issue- no one had attended any appointments in hospital or doctor this year (2021) so couldn't of got it there.

No one in my bubble since beginning of January
So they could have passed it on to one of you then. You had it with no symptoms. Passed it in to your oh who passed it in to your baby. Long enough time since being infectious to be negative.

Or more likely false positive.
