Asthma and COVID-19 Vaccine

Hi everyone

Does anybody know when asthmatics are likely to receive the vaccination?

I was just wondering as there is not much info on Asthma UK what category it would fall under if it's just mild to moderate asthma and not classed as severe.

Thanks

Doesn’t look like it now unless it’s severe or not easily controlled. Asthma UK have updated their website.

Sassy14 · 09/02/2021 20:22

@Cloudsurfing so do you know if this would mean we are in group 6? Thanks

It's still very unclear. If your asthma is difficult to control or you are on a higher regime of treatment than standard you might get it in group 6, but if it's well controlled and you are just on a standard steroid inhaler and reliever probably not.

I’ve interpreted it as not being.

Cloudsurfing · 09/02/2021 22:07

No I don’t think so, just in normal age banked no priority groups.

Eccle80 · 09/02/2021 22:15

No, the information from Asthma UK today suggests most asthmatics who usually get the flu vaccine are unlikely to qualify under group 6. All a bit of a mess as they previously said they would, and whilst they say they are still pushing for GPs to err on the cautious side with who they offer to, it is a bit late when it sounds like a number of areas are already getting onto group 6.

QueenOfTheDoubleWide · 09/02/2021 22:48

On the plus side, asthmatics who have caught Covid have actually fared far better than expected which is why we have been relegated in vaccination terms

Janedownourlane · 10/02/2021 00:01

Now this is a strange thing...friend who has asthma and coughs on and off throughout the day had the Pfizer jab a couple of weeks ago (NHS worker) and has noticed that she isnt coughing anymore! She doesnt know if this is vaccine related or a coincidence. I wonder if anyone else has noticed this?

WouldstrokeTomHardy · 10/02/2021 01:17

We were group 6 but it has been changed by the looks of it. Group 6 now are people with severe asthma. But weren't those with severe asthma in group 4? The cynic in me wonders if these vaccines will be used on teachers or police?

Last week the calculator said I was due my vaccine from 22nd Feb. Now it's not until late April

purplebagladylovesgin · 10/02/2021 01:28

I spoke to Asthma UK earlier today and they said that group 4 is comprised of those under a respiratory consultant that had advised them the shield (with a letter).

Group 6 are those who have required repeated steroid tablets on top of their normal inhalers or who have been admitted to hospital in the last 12 months from asthma. This group is generally under the care of their GP not a hospital consultant.

All other asthmatics are in their age group priority group and are not singled out as more vulnerable.

This is backed by the latest findings from Oxford university. Which is good news for asthmatics on steroid inhalers.
It's looking likely that asthmatics who are well controlled and take their steroid inhalers as prescribed might be protected from severe covid.

Asthma uk are seeking further clarification on what exactly constitutes poorly controlled asthma.

WouldstrokeTomHardy · 10/02/2021 01:36

Thanks for the clarification@purple

Thank you @purplebagladylovesgin

I had mine on Sunday but I have brittle asthma.

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 10/02/2021 07:11

this is positive news isnt it

Blaggingit123 · 10/02/2021 07:33

I don’t think there has been any change in the vaccine priority list, the confusion is that asthma patients were originally ‘clinically vulnerable’ last Spring but there were several studies last summer showing that there was no link between mild/moderate asthma and severe covid and it may even be protective.

I have controlled asthma and just had covid 5 weeks ago, while I did need to use relievers for a few days I had pretty much stopped coughing after 2-3 weeks and breathing now pretty much back to normal. My oxygen levels were less affected than DH’s who is not asthmatic. The cough was a lot less severe than a virus I had last January where I only narrowly avoided steroid treatment and had a severe cough for a month.
