Testing child without key symptoms?

What are people's thoughts on this currently?

Just put poorly DS to bed. Feels hot and looks flushed/feverish but thermometer says his temp is normal. No cough, no change of taste.

He says he feels dizzy and a bit sick with a headache, and his body aches. Unusual combo of symptoms for him to complain about.

He's currently has a kw place at school and I work at a school too so I'm a bit wary of not taking less common symptoms seriously. But then on the other hand it could be absolutely nothing and Covid paranoia is kicking in Hmm

Will see how he is in the morning (and will obviously keep him off regardless if he doesn't bounce out of bed in the morning) but if he's not better would you get him tested?

I'm leaning towards doing it given test capacity seems to be pretty good at the moment, or would using a test for a child without the main symptoms be considered irresponsible? Sometimes it feels like you can't do right for doing wrong with this bloody virus! Confused

There have been some burst bubbles at his school over the last few weeks, but not his bubble.

WWYD?

I would get him tested without a second thought, and obviously self isolate until results are back. If he feels hot and feels unwell that would be enough for me.

Bunnybigears · 08/02/2021 21:03

Get him tested no question.

QueenOwl · 08/02/2021 21:10

Thank you both. I think better safe than sorry too but think I'm slowly losing the ability to look at things objectively anymore 🤪

Appreciate your clear cut take on it!

Get him tested. Testing centres are not particularly busy. It's more important to find out whether your child is ill than to conform to some sort of mob rule from 10 months ago.

QueenOwl · 08/02/2021 21:12

Mob rule is right!

Definitely test. Well done for considering it. If everyone were like you we'd have better control of this virus.

My local authority have issued guidance for all school children to get a test for pretty much any symptom, but they only need to isolate until the results come back if it's one of the main 3. Obviously other rules eg around sickness and diarrhea still have to be followed as well. Good luck op, I hope it's just a bug.

Thattwatoverthere · 08/02/2021 21:33

Test. My DC are running a bit hot today and we have tests tomorrow morning (all 4 of us as all feeling a bit grotty and coldy). As they're in nursery still I'd hate to be the parent that sends them in with even a slight chance they could have it and pass it on.
We've had a few tests now that have all so far been negative but I'd rather be safe than take a chance.
Plus symptoms seem to be changing all the time, I don't trust the 3 that were originally given as guidance any more.

That's interesting, and makes perfect sense to me.

"feels hot" IS one of the symptoms. Not "registers fever on a thermometer" - just feels hot.

So this shouldn't even be a debate for you. He has one of the symptoms. He should be tested.

For heavens sake, why do people insist on being so needlessly rude. I think it's perfectly obvious from my OP that I'm trying to be responsible and do the right thing.

His temperature was 36.6C and it was his face that felt warm and looked flushed - NHS website specifies chest/back for 'feeling hot'.

Anyway, it matters not because I've got a 9am test appointment for a test now.

@QueenOwl - we had a large outbreak at the school I work in before Christmas and those were the main symptoms the children who got it had. When it became clear the school had an outbreak, Public Health England advised the school to send home children with any symptoms of any illness whatsoever and ask them to get tested before they were returned to school.

QueenOwl · 08/02/2021 22:17

Fingers crossed for speedy negative results for you all @Thattwatoverthere 🤞

That sounds very sensible @Walkaround. Certainly none of the kids I know who've had it have had typical symptoms.
