Thursday 4th Feb both my line manager and I tested negative at work in the morning. During the day we had close contact (2m) but wore masks.
On Friday afternoon I had contact with my mum who we are in a support bubble with (she lives alone and is elderly). Saturday afternoon my manager felt rough, did a test and tested positive. A number of other colleagues tested positive over the weekend, but none I had contact with.

I’m now absolutely beside myself that I’ve given it to my mum. I’ve tried to find out how quickly I’d be contagious, assuming I was infected on Thursday. Does anyone know? I can’t find anything online.

(I’ve had a headache since Saturday, but no official symptoms - am assuming I am positive).

Sorry I can't be as reassuring as you'd like, but didn't want to read and ignore.
I'd say it's possible, but fingers crossed she'll be ok.

2 days before symptoms start is when you are classed as being infectious.
This is why t&t want to know the contacts of positive cases 2 days prior to being symptomatic so they can advise them to isolate.
So you will need to isolate for 10 days following your last contact with your manager.
You may or may not have coronavirus yourself. Could your headache be stress from finding out you manager is positive and worrying about it?
Tbh if I was you i’d do a test even if it just puts your mind at rest.

2-14 days I think with an average of 5 days.

PuzzledObserver · 08/02/2021 19:08

If Thursday was the only time you had contact with someone who later tested positive, the odds are against you having been infectious when you saw your Mum.

Typical 5-6 days incubation, infectious for 2-3 days before symptoms appear, so unlikely to be infectious one day after exposure. Not impossible, however, as there are always outliers.

@ChristmasCovid I’m getting tested tomorrow. Really hope you’re right re the stress!

Negligible risk that you'd be infectious a day after exposure, your viral load just wouldn't be high enough.

shinynewapple2021 · 08/02/2021 19:24

I think they say on average it takes 2 days for the virus to take hold , the next 2-3 days you are contagious and most symptoms start on 5th day .

So if you were infected Thursday hopefully you should be OK still on Friday . Fingers crossed for you .

Thank you so much for responding. I know there’s nothing I can do, but it’s reassuring to hear I probably wasn’t contagious on Friday.

If your mum is elderly has she had one of her jabs? I was in a terrible state recently. I had taken my mum in the car on a 30 minute journey to get her 2nd jab. Three days later I tested positive as did 12 out of 17 of my colleagues at work - so I knew how contagious it was. Luckily I think my mum must have had good immunity from the first jab as she was fine.
