Can DH go to France to visit MIL?

We live in England. MIL is sadly very ill in hospital in France. She's had a few health problems and has been in hospital since Christmas, and we have now had the news that she has tested positive for COVID and is on a ventilator. It doesn't look good Sad

DH understandably wants to see his mum, but we're totally lost getting to figure out of he can - he's trying to read the info on the French embassy website but can't make head nor tail of it in his current emotional state, and my French is not good enough to understand all the legal jargon.

Can anyone tell me if he can go to France to visit his mother? Are French hospitals even allowing visitors if the patient is on their deathbed? If she doesn't recover, would he be allowed to go to her funeral?

I don't know how to support him and feel terrible for him that he may not be able to say goodbye.

The forms are all on here.

It would also be worth joining Facebook groups for French people in the U.K. and ask who’s been to France since January and what their experience was like. Bonne chance !

He needs to check the hotel situation in the U.K., they are pretty much shut.

I did a similar journey in reverse last autumn, 1200km in total, with several snooze stops in the car.

Good luck.

As Nightowl33 says a French citizen can enter Metropolitan France for the reasons listed on the attestation, which includes:

"Motif familial impérieux relevant du cas de force majeure ;"

He'll need to check with the relevant EHPAD or hospital on how and even if visits are allowed.

I also agree with Nightowl33 that since France is not on the UK "red list" ATM he will not need to hotel quarantine on return to the UK.

Good Luck.

yes, he can travel but needs to have a certified covid test in advance, has to have been done within 72 hours of arriving in france. He'll need to complete the forms linked to earlier and carry them with him. DP travelled over last week (chunnel) for similar family reasons. Also, there's a curfew in France so he'll need to check travel arrangements against that. i think you can still travel with documents but more likely to get stopped etc. Can't help about whether he'll be allowed to visit

Good point , it's 1800-0600 nationwide, there's an exemption for:

"Déplacements pour motif familial impérieux, pour l’assistance aux personnes vulnérables ou précaires ou pour la garde d’enfants."
