Do I need to take my 3yo for a test?

Hello all,

I'm not clear on what to do next.

My older daughter (aged 3) woke at 0500 and vomited 3-4 times until 0930. Gave liquids only. Temp went up to 39 and she started to shiver, gave Calpol and temp came down. Seemed fine and ate dry toast and banana. 1430 looked unwell again and starts to shiver. Temp 39 again. Gave Calpol ... temp still high (38.7) at 1500 so gave nurofen. Now asleep stripped off and temp is c. 37.8. Will continue to give liquids and monitor temp etc.

She goes to a childminder one day per week, last went on Friday.

No respiratory symptoms.

Do I need to take her for a Covid test? If so, when? I can't take her till she's feeling a bit better surely?

I've already contacted the CM and other parents. One other parent has replied to say their 3yo "seemed a bit fluey yesterday and had a slight temp but is fine today" (no test been done).

Thanks :)

She has a fever so yes you need to get her tested.

EezyOozy · 07/02/2021 16:41

Ok... I'll try and book one online. I don't want to take her when she's this Unwell though... I'll see what slots are available. Thanks

Yes she needs a test as she has had a fever. The guidance is very clear. The other parent needs to test their child!

WhatKatyDidNxt · 07/02/2021 16:44

Yep. I have COVID right now: nausea, shivers and temperature have been some of my symptoms. I hope she gets well soon

welldonesquirrel · 07/02/2021 16:44

my 4 yr old was like this and even though I knew it was just a sickness bug i did take her to be tested as she had a temperature. it was negative, b prepared though, for a 3yr old the test itself is quite unpleasant for a child so I guess it depends whether for the next 10days or so can u keep her at home if u dont decide to test? Good luck it was awful for me personally and i dont think I'd do it again knowing what I know now.

inquietant · 07/02/2021 16:44

Yes, get a postal test if you can't get out. Assume covid and isolate.

SimonJT · 07/02/2021 16:44

She needs a test, if the result is negative she shouldn’t return to the childminder until she is fever free for 48 hours.

I hope the childminder refuses to accept the ‘fluy’ child until they either have a negative test or after a ten day isolation.

EezyOozy · 07/02/2021 16:45

Thanks all. I'll look into postal tests too. I'm not sure what the test involves ... doesn't sound nice from PP

Its just a quick twist of a long cotton bud in each nostril, it is very tickly.

DinosaurDiana · 07/02/2021 16:48

Don’t forget to inform your childminder that your child has symptoms.

GAW19 · 07/02/2021 16:48

My 19month old DD had a temp, she tested positive. She was a little grumpy for 1 day but then was absolutely fine, no other symptoms. Dh also tested positive, had weak legs for 1 evening. Was absolutely fine. I ended up in hospital for a week with Covid Pneumonia.
Please get her tested x

EezyOozy · 07/02/2021 16:50

Thanks all. There's a walk in test clinic round the corner apparently so I'll just bite the bullet . The postal ones look like a bit of a faff on and we wouldn't know the answer for days

OverTheRainbow88 · 07/02/2021 16:51

Good luck! Hope all goes well. The tests are fine, about 10 sec in the nose and that’s it.

Ok booked for the morning. Dumbass question - it says each person being tested has to bring photo ID. Do they just want my ID then? Thanks !

Of course she needs testing,! Hope she feels better soon

The person (s) being tested ID

Flev · 07/02/2021 17:25

We had to test my 2 year old who obviously has no ID and weren't asked for any. Be prepared for the fact you'll gave to do the test yourself, so if you can take a second adult with you it may be easier to have one to hold/restrain and the other to do the test.

EezyOozy · 07/02/2021 17:26

She has no id so I assume they won't ask for any.

EezyOozy · 07/02/2021 17:27

@Flev I will have to go alone with her. How did you find it? I've just read that I can do both nostrils instead of throat, which I think will be less awful.

CatRatSplat · 07/02/2021 17:29

Our DD3 doesn't have ID but dh took his ID and all they wanted was the QR code.

TheGriffle · 07/02/2021 17:31

I took my 3 year old for one the other week. I will be honest with you, it was horrific. We went to a walk in one so I was on my own with her. You need to twiddle the long cotton bud up each nostril for at least 10 seconds each. She hated. Took about half an hour of me restraining her and her screaming and crying. No one is allowed to help. Afterwards she was right as rain but bloody hell I hated having to do it to her.

EezyOozy · 07/02/2021 17:32

Oh god.

I'll have to take some very good bribes.

OP posts:
TheGriffle · 07/02/2021 17:32

They didn’t ask for id just the QR code. You will both need to wear a mask though but obviously take it off for her test then it goes straight back on afterwards.

welshweasel · 07/02/2021 17:37

My 2 year old has had a few tests. Very straightforward. Wound down car window, I restrained his head and arms, someone swabbed his throat, first time he whinged for 30 seconds, subsequently no crying at all. It will be fine and all over very quickly.

trevthecat · 07/02/2021 17:59

Postal tests don't take long. We ordered on the Saturday night, arrived Sunday morning, posted back sun afternoon, results 4pm Monday. Just as fast as any other test
