Zoom nights out - no babysitters, overpriced drinks, no taxis, straight to bed after.

I'm permanently work from home now. My company have downsized the office and I don't have a desk any more.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 07/02/2021 18:29

I spend 20 hours a week in work zoom meetings in “peacetime” I don’t do it outside of work now let alone when things open up

AuntieStella · 07/02/2021 18:36

Zoom parents evenings - work brillantly and you never get stuck behind The Parent Who Won't Shut Up

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 07/02/2021 18:43

My sociable 10 year old has cried a couple of times after coming off a zoom call. And I find them very draining so I know how she feels, I’m not really sure why though!? It’s certainly no substitute for real life human interaction!

I can forsee the following might catch on:

The wearing of masks in Dr's, dentists, opticians etc waiting rooms and in hospitals.

Not shaking hands with or hugging/kissing total strangers.

Increased uptake of online shopping.
Increased use of contactless payment methods.

Hand sanitiser in dentists and opticians etc.

Greater use of 111 as a filter to reduce unnecessary A&E attendance.

Greater use of remote consultations with GPs by Zoom or phone.

Local small shops and takeaways retaining thecdelivery services that they set up in lockdowns.

Ambulance crew wearing masks.

They're draining because you lack all of the normal body language and eye contact which make up such a vital part of our interaction, without us realising it. Plus, conversation doesn't 'flow' because every time there's even a one second delay you panic that the connection has cut out, and even a small echo can break up a conversation. I also read somewhere that your brain finds it very stressful for these and other reasons.

I don't mind Zoom 1 2 1 with a person I know well, but trying to replicate real life interaction with groups doing Zoom quizzes and the like is just depressing for me.

I think that the Covid restrictions merely accelerated changes that were already underway. So in a post covid UK I see:
More home working- it's going to be very difficult for companies to argue in future that work cannot be done from home when there is 12 months and counting of evidence otherwise.
Online shopping- those that found it unfamiliar are now happy to continue
Holidays in term time- it's going to be difficult for schools to argue that children have to be in school in future
A move out of big cities like London when people are more able to work from home for at least part of the week.
Greater interest in home cooking
Greater interest in exercise
Increased division and hostility between generations in particular between young and old
Greater social inequality
Less international air travel

I'm sure there are more but just my initial thoughts

GreenWheat · 07/02/2021 18:50

A long term reduction in showboating business travel, greater flexibility in the workplace - both hours and location, more online shopping, more domestic travel.

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 07/02/2021 18:55

Thank you @IcedPurple , you’ve explained it perfectly.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 07/02/2021 18:58

Zoom nights out? No thank you. I like actually being with people.

Personally I hope none of the changes stay. Perhaps WFH although I can't WFH myself so it doesn't affect me. And less unnecessary business travel.

RedskyBynight · 07/02/2021 19:02

If WFH becomes more of a thing, here is absolutely no way people will want to interact virtually during their social hours as well. I don't think people who don't wfh realise how draining is to be on phone/video calls all day and then know your only way of communicating with anyone outside of your household is to do more of the same in the evening.

buenavistabelle · 07/02/2021 19:05

This has to be a joke. Zoom nights out can get TF as soon as possible.

buttheywereonlysatellites · 07/02/2021 19:27

Oh god, no. I really struggle with the virtual stuff and can't wait to go back to doing face to face stuff.
I don't work from home, but our work meetings are on Teams as we don't have space for everyone. It's rubbish. I can't keep track. I miss information. Everything takes longer because tech goes wrong.
No more bloody Zooms, please!

Donoteatthekittens · 07/02/2021 19:30

Far fewer office jobs - they’ll be offshored abroad to cheaper countries.
