Getting vaccine but not registered with GP

One of my friends in her 50s found out recently she'd been removed from her GP list for moving out of the area so until she can register with another GP, she doesn't have one. Will she even be on the vaccine list if she's not with a GP? Does anyone know where the lists come from?

until she can register with another GP, she doesn't have one

What is stopping her from doing this?

DrDetriment · 07/02/2021 09:47

She said her local GP isn't taking new registrations during covid, which sounded odd to me.

Surely there's more than enough time to register before they get to doing those in their 50s. They are doing a fantastic job but that's weeks away, don't you just fill in a form to register?

PeterRabbitt · 07/02/2021 09:49

I'm a Practice Manager and I can assure you that any practice has a legal obligation to register patients who are living within their boundary. Covid or no Covid.

Bakeachocolatecake2day · 07/02/2021 09:49

GP's only don't take registrations as they are full....she needs to find one pronto.

Can a GP surgery refuse to register me?
A GP surgery can refuse to register you because:

they are not taking any new patients
you live outside the practice boundary and they are not accepting patients from out of their area
you have been removed from that GP surgery register before
it's a long way from your home and you need extra care, for example home visits
Information:
If you have problems registering with a GP surgery, call the NHS England Customer Contact Centre on 0300 311 22 33.

Contact the CCG and ask to to be allocated to a surgery-explain you’ve tried but the surgery refused.
I think that you’re right that the GPs are probably doing the lists (but am not sure on that).

Frequentflier · 07/02/2021 09:51

I moved to London in September and was told I could not be registered back then. I waited a month and went back, and was registered. But given how things are now, I would make a fuss and insist on being registered. As it is my husband is having a lot of trouble getting his previous records recognised.

BlueTimes · 07/02/2021 09:51

Then she needs to find another GP surgery that will take her and covid is not an excuse for not registering her.

DrDetriment · 07/02/2021 09:51

Thanks for the phone number. I'll pass it to her. Perhaps they are full. The receptionist just said we aren't taking new patients because we can't see you face to face because of covid.

Our local gp are doing registrations the mistake was listening to the receptionist. Speak to the practice manager

Frazzled2207 · 07/02/2021 09:55

What pp said. They have to accept her as a patient whatever the receptionist said.

Thebusiness · 07/02/2021 09:56

She just needs to go to another one. I moved into an area and the closest gp said they were full and not accepting patients so I went to the next nearest one.

DrDetriment · 07/02/2021 10:05

Thanks everyone. I'll pass this on to her.

When did she last ask them? I know at the beginning of covid our local surgery were not yet set up for face to face appointments. However now they do phone or email appointments if possible, but will also do face to face ones if necessary.

They are most definitely still taking on new patients as my parents recently moved to the area. I got paperwork for them to fill in at home and they just had to return it with ID and proof of address.

LemonTT · 07/02/2021 11:16

BTW. A GP practice can’t just decide it’s full and stop registration. They need to get approval to do this. And they can’t say they are not doing f2f appointments either. They might not be doing them in that surgery but there will be an option for someone to be seen

Really you don’t need a health check to register either. That’s just another GP practice filibuster.

But I wouldn’t register with a practice playing these games if there is a choice.

Frazzled2207 · 07/02/2021 11:28

@LemonTT

Neither would I. It may be a case of finding another practice in the catchment.
Probably depends where you are but I know I’m in the catchment for three different surgeries. Perhaps one can legitimately say it’s full if at least one or the others is accepting
