Mask / no mask confrontation in Lidl today

On my way around the shop, I saw their security guard tell a shopper off for not wearing a mask. Absolutely fine and correct.

Then when I was being served at the till, the same security guard was moaning to the cashier about the guy not wearing a mask. Except throughout all this, the security guard wasn't wearing one either!

How can he possibly remonstrate with someone not wearing a mask, and not realise he has just undermined his whole message?

Also I wondered why the guard wonders around without a mask on - hardly good for the shop's attempt to maintain covid safety.

Did you not say “well you’ve not got one on either” ?

BritWifeinUSA · 06/02/2021 18:57

Why is it “absolutely fine and correct” for a security guard to tell someone off fir not wearing a mask? Maybe they are exempt? We all know that at masks are useless anyway. And most masks don’t even fit correctly.

Masks are not useless ffs

I didn't stay to watch the whole exchange so I have no idea how the non-mask wearer replied.

The cashier in my Lidl today was keeping her chin lovely and warm with her mask while she shouted loudly to her colleague two tills over, keeping up a whole non work related conversation throughout the whole transaction. I'm generally also of the view that most of us wear totally useless ones and do it in ways that if anything exacerbate risk (more hands near face etc), but if we're going to insist on this hygenie theatre then let's do it sensibly, with employees enforcing it not being hypocrites.. Same reason I wear mine in corridors at school (when I'm there).

A guy in front of me had a mask on when browsing the aisles in the local convenience store, then the cashier asked him a question and he pulled his mask down to answer. I despair.
I would have asked the guard why he wasn't wearing one.

Last time in lidel in the do it yourself que a man behind me want standing on the circles but half way between do not practising social distancing plus he wasn't wearing a mask so l was uncomfortable but the most amazing thing was he was wearing a lidel badge with his name and title assistant manager.
Haven't been back.

Interesting point. Looking at some other threads here on mask wearing (or not) the overwhelming view seems to be mind your own business and don't try to police other people (because if they kick off it's your fault for being a busybody). So the default position / advice is to move away from non-mask wearers and / or people that are not observing social distancing next to you. Which on reflection is probably the most sensible option or you end up with a screaming match (see other current post about fracas in M&S foodhall).

We have a lady who restocks the shelves at our local Tesco. She wears a mask but stops to chat to people and pulls it down while she does so. Drives me mad.

You can report this to your local environmental health team. Please do.
