Would you have expected an 80 year old, CEV to have had the vaccine by now?

We live in Wales, my mum is 80, housebound and has carers coming in twice a day. She has a terminal lung condition, which requires full time oxygen, she is not at end of life yet, but does have very poor breathing. If she has to leave the house she is taken in an ambulance and carried out, so we can't take her to a vaccine centre.

She has up to 6 carers a week coming in to help her and we feel she is at risk from this, I know they follow all the correct PPE etc, but we're still worried for her. My dad is also going out doing the shopping, but he's had his vaccine, he will not hear of anyone else going so we've given up with that idea.

When my dad received his last week, the nurse told him they'd be out to do my mums early this week. They haven't been and are not coming at all this week.

My mum called the surgery and the receptionist was dismissive with her, said they'd put her on the list for a home visit (she wasn't on it until my dad asked, even though she's had a shielding letter), she wouldn't give her an idea of when she might get it, told her she didn't want to hear anymore and put the phone down!

I know that the receptionist is probably getting hundreds of the same phone calls everyday and I imagine is feeling frustrated, but putting the phone down is just plain rude.

Having been a patient at this surgery myself, I moved due to their disorganisation, I feel it could be weeks and weeks before she gets the vaccine.

So, are we expecting too much or should we take it further.

There are separate rules for those who are medically housebound. We are doing really well in our surgery and are doing the 65+ group today, however we've only just been given permission to book the housebound as logistics have been harder to coordinate for the housebound.

I don't think you are expecting too much! It's the 5th and the deadline for her to get the vaccine is the 15th. I would call and ask to speak to a manager if that receptionist picks up again. You could threaten to make a complaint or actually make one if you are spoken to so rudely again.

It's one thing if you were 60 and hassling them but you can politely ask and they can politely respond, even if that's 'I don't know sorry'.

No, I don't think you are expecting too much. My MIL (housebound and in her nineties) had her first dose over 3 weeks ago (England). Does your Mum have a good MP who might take up her case?

There is a phone number you can call for over 80s now. If you can't find it, ask on the Wakes 4 thread.

COVID-19 Vaccination Information

If you are aged 80 years or over, or know of someone who is, and have not had a first COVID-19 vaccination or an appointment to have it, please call the vaccinations booking centre and we will arrange an appointment.

The opening hours are 8am to 5pm, seven days a week. The lines are very busy, the best time to call is late afternoon, or evening before 8pm. This message is for the over 80s only who do not have a first appointment, please do not use the telephone number provided above to enquire about new appointments unless you are over 80 or information about the vaccine as the call handlers are not medically trained.

Please only use this vaccinations booking centre number for the above reasons. We are sending invites out for vaccination in order of priority, according to national recommendations. We will repeat this process for different priority groups in due course to make sure everyone has had an opportunity to be vaccinated at the correct time.

Telephone number for the vaccinations booking centre: 03000 840004

Housebound patients are a different list. Not great but should be done soon .

lunalucie · 05/02/2021 19:18

If you look on the Welsh government website the information is there for housebound patients. The district nurses and vaccination teams are giving the jabs but it's probably going to be slower given the travelling involved.

IdblowJonSnow · 05/02/2021 19:21

Chase it up. Nothing to lose.
Sorry your mum is ill. Hope she gets her jab soon.

notevenat20 · 05/02/2021 19:29

Definitely chase it up!

bigbluebus · 05/02/2021 19:31

My 92 yo MIL had her jab on a home visit at least 3 weeks ago. She lives in England though not Wales.

lljkk · 05/02/2021 21:17

Housebound people are the last of the > 80s to get jab, this was on radio chat last night (radio 5 questions). The surgery teams will go to them but takes a while longer to organise. No harm in ringing to make sure she's on the list of those that need to be seen.

CeeJay81 · 05/02/2021 21:28

Where in Wales are you? Check the local health board information.

MintyCedric · 05/02/2021 21:34

West Sussex here. My dad is 82 and bed bound on end of life care. He had his vaccination yesterday.

It is a worry when you have multiple carers and medical professionals coming in, I know. Hope your mum gets her jab v. Soon.

PrincessNutNuts · 05/02/2021 21:44

I'd chase it up at this point, but I know that housebound patients are having it done at home so it takes longer.
