Lib Dems: UK Must Give Away Vaccine once Vulnerable are Done

FizzyPepsi · 04/02/2021 18:33

I see the Lib Dems are now arguing that the UK should start giving away its vaccine stock to other countries as soon as the top 4 vulnerable groups are done this month.

Is this the approach we should be taking as a country?

Or should we be doing everything possible to get as many of our own citizens vaccinated so we can protect them and start removing restrictions?

Wasn't she the one who said she can look into a person's mind and 'see' their gender? Or some such bollocks.

I take the views of my cat more seriously.

I remembered it as "soul", not "mind": either way,she doesn't let science get in the way of her ideology, and she's doing it again.

IIRC LM is very privileged and doesn't really understand the lives of normal people in this country.

She's said a number of ridiculous things and seems completely divorced from reality.

AgeLikeWine · 04/02/2021 23:52

Vaccines should go to the countries, and people, most in need. That means the U.K. and other densely populated developed countries with elderly, unfit, overweight populations.

Fit, healthy people in developing countries with much, much younger populations don’t need the vaccines nearly as much.

HSHorror · 05/02/2021 00:44

100% IloveJKRowling
Plus the 30/40 yo are the parents. One child losing a parent unnecessarily to this is very wrong.
The unvaccinated will also include the asthmatics who could have an attack and need treatment.
Unprotected kids who will be safer if parents and teachers get vaccinated. !!

Lib dems can donate their own vaxes.

Also me not being vaxxed dramatically increases the risk to my 70yo parents one who is ecv.

HSHorror · 05/02/2021 00:47

Plus it would be increadibly shit to not offer it to all those under 50 who want it and have had covid badly as that is very scary.
If they give it away they need to allow it to be bought privately.!

caringcarer · 05/02/2021 01:47

Everything the Libdems say is crap. We are as a country doing well with our vaccine programme and need to keep rolling it out. The sooner we all get it the sooner we will come out of lockdown and economic turmoil.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 05/02/2021 07:20

@ClashCityRocker

Haven't we contributed quite a proportionality large amount of money to the covax scheme?

And at this stage, we're certainly one of the countries most in need of vaccines.

Exactly. Im all for helping others but we need to vaccinate every adult first who wants one before we give away spares. Healthy adults are still at risk even if younger so deserve protection too.
EmmanuelleMakro · 05/02/2021 07:27

Are the LibDems even a thing? Have no idea who their leader is now but they’ve just reminded all of why they a haven’t seen ver been and won’t ever be relevant.

IloveJKRowling · 05/02/2021 09:51

Vaccinations need to be available to all adults who want one or we become a two tier society. There are lots of conditions that could cause severe covid that don't qualify as CV or CEV. E.g. if you're pre-diabetic. Or diabetic without having been diagnosed.

The level of rage people will feel if they're denied vaccines so people in countries with infection rates 100x lower can get them will be huge. I actually think it might be the thing that could get people out protesting. Which is why the government won't do it.

However much I dislike the Tory government and think they're incompetent and have handled this pandemic terribly (except for the excellent vaccination program - credit where it's due), the Lib Dems are available to provide an example of how politicians can be even less competent, and more out of touch with reality, so I suppose to that extent they're providing a public service.

peak2021 · 05/02/2021 09:54

We will ultimately have more vaccines than are needed and I think some then should go to developing countries, especially the Oxford one given its ability to be kept in a standard fridge. However, I think at the very least all the 9 groups should have been vaccinated first.

Toorapid · 05/02/2021 10:07

I suspect from a moral/ethical pov it's right but there's no way on earth this government will do that or that the public would stand for it.

merrymouse · 05/02/2021 10:10

I suspect from a moral/ethical pov it's right

It might not be if the most efficient way of managing the pandemic is to target countries where infection and death rates are high.

HSHorror · 05/02/2021 17:29

Greece apparently saying people can holiday there - if they are vaccinated.
I am even more suspicious though as we dont even know the vax priority list for under 50..

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 05/02/2021 17:42

Agreed. We should be doing way more to help these nations not just gloating that we got it first.

Which we can do after we've vaccinated our own citizens. That's not gloating we got it first, it's being sensible.

SittinOnTheDockOfTheBay · 05/02/2021 17:49

@Againstmachine

No the government's first responsibility is to its own citizens.

We need to get people vaccinated so we can open back up, as otherwise we might not be able to afford to help these other countries out in future.

Absolutely agree.

Layla Moran is about as useful as Jo Swinson. Arrogant and out of touch. The Lib Dem's are now a waste of space so I wouldn't take what she says seriously.

twitter.com/laylamoran/status/1357358428805595137?s=21

Definitely not. We have had so many deaths and so many sick people, we need to look after our own first.
notevenat20 · 05/02/2021 18:08

Haven't we bought far too much vaccine for the country? It makes sense for us to give the surplus to countries that need it.

CoffeeandCroissant · 05/02/2021 18:10

I think the moral/ethical argument is about younger healthy people in rich countries being vaccinated while the most vulnerable and frontline health care workers in poorer countries have yet to receive any vaccinations.

But a better solution might be to help upscale manufacturing globally so that more vaccine doses are available sooner for everyone (easier said than done, I know).

Vaccination of at least the priority 1 groups (1 to 9) in the UK should allow restrictions to be eased and the economy to open up, so that would also put the UK in a better financial situation to help other countries.

It's accurate though to say that the UK and US for example were only able to successfully order large quantities of several different vaccines and be 'first in the queue' because they could afford to take the risk of throwing large amounts of money into backing vaccines without knowing which ones would work and he available first. Poorer countries were unable to do this.

CoffeeandCroissant · 05/02/2021 18:12

Typo: be not he Grin

notevenat20 · 05/02/2021 18:14

By Summer there will be at least 5 vaccines that we have bought millions of. We really aren't going to use them all are we?

Todayissunny · 05/02/2021 18:20

@IloveJKRowling
Also, other countries aren't sending teachers back to work without PPE or ventilation, or smaller class sizes, or blended learning.

In other countries teachers and children (including primary) are wearing masks all day to stop spread. It's working where is am. One teacher in my school unwell and tested positive. It was not transmitted to a single other child or teacher.

Iamclearlyamug · 05/02/2021 18:29

Clearly Layla Moran is a morON, we should be protecting ALL of our own people before helping others. And the countries we do help should be the truly vulnerable countries, NOT the EU who have more than enough money to sort their own shit out, not our fault they’re so bloody slow and bureaucratic

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 05/02/2021 18:45

I remembered it as "soul", not "mind": either way,she doesn't let science get in the way of her ideology, and she's doing it again.

Soul, yes. In a debate in Westminster Hall, Layla Moran announced that she could look into someone’s soul & know if they were a man or a woman, regardless of their physical appearance. I was sitting behind her at the time & it was very much a WTF moment.

Againstmachine · 06/02/2021 08:56

That's fine once we have vacinated our population, but the WHO wasn't us to give it away after we have vaccinated the 70year olds.
