Has anyone with an allergy had a Corona vaccination?

Was just wondering what the situation is. In the past, I've had a couple of occasions where if had reactions. The first was about 35 years ago when I was a teenager and I was on some antibiotics for acne. Having realised it's significance as an adult, I asked my GP to check my records and there is nothing recorded on there. My mum had and still has very poor mental health and is not able to remember anything about it.
The second occasion was about 8 years ago. I was having what was thought to be a gallbladder attack and was taking over the counter antacid medication. I got very itchy with hives around my neck. I can't think of anything else that I was exposed to at the time that could have caused it and my GP has shown no inclination to investigate what it was.
I now qualify in group 9 for a vaccine and would like to have it when its possible but not sure what the situation is when I potentially have allergies that are not medically documented. I intend to ask for a telephone Gp appointment to talk to them about it before the time comes but would appreciate anyone else's experiences before I do so I've got an idea of what is happening for other people.

My aunt is allergic to penicillin and she also had a serious reaction to some liqueur on holiday and ended up in hospital, she had her vaccine three weeks ago. She spoke to the gp beforehand who said that they'd cover everything at the vaccine appointment, which they did. She's been fine since.

ashley69ly · 04/02/2021 13:19

Thank you for that. I really want to be able to have it as I work in childcare with preschool children so no masks or distancing. You have given me hope.

I understand the Pfizer one appears to be the most problematic with allergies (rather than the Oxford-AZ)

Cornishmaiden · 04/02/2021 13:29

I am allergic to penicillin and various foods eg. ginger, strawberries and aniseed. I am also asthmatic with hayfever thrown in as well. Had my Pfizer jab yesterday. No reaction at all but was watched closely for the 15 minutes wait time and then sat quietly in the car for another 15 mins - my choice.
Today my arm aches and is a bit red and swollen at injection site and I feel a bit achey but otherwise I feel fine. I want to reassure you that you will be fine.

RosesAndLemonade · 04/02/2021 13:35

I have severe allergies and so will not have any. You couldn't pay me to. I'm not fussed by the fact I can't. I'm an SEN teacher so we've been offered them with work due to high risk and I've been offered as I'm on the shielding list (but I've never shielded and worked throughout ) but I wouldn't dream of having it. No way . Way way way too risky

RosesAndLemonade · 04/02/2021 13:40

(my allergies are very severe though. Like have some close to being fatal (and would be if I took the same thing again) ...so there is just no way I could ever risk this .

whatswithtodaytoday · 04/02/2021 13:47

@RosesAndLemonade Depending on what your allergies actually are, you might be ok with the Oxford vaccine - it seems to be far less promblematic. The Pfizer indeed might not be suitable, but there are options. I would check with your doctor/consultant. I have a friend with tons of allergies who carries two epi-pens and she's hopeful she will be able to have one eventually.

And if not, then you are one of the people we need to protect by getting as many other people vaccinated as possible.

lightand · 04/02/2021 14:23

With the greatest of respect @CornishMaiden, you last sentence is somewhat alarming to say to someone who has allergies.
Everyone with allergies is not the same, will not necessarily react the same way, is on different medications etc.
A doctor can maybe give reassurance, but not a member of the public.

lightand · 04/02/2021 14:24

I have been asked to post that, btw.

Chailatteplease · 04/02/2021 14:42

Yes. Have allergies to 2 medications and had AZ vaccine last week. It was fine, just had to stay for an extra 15 mins to ensure no reaction.

Cornishmaiden · 04/02/2021 14:49

I accept I should not have put that last sentence in @lightand
I just wanted to reassure that all allergies etc are discussed at the appointment with the medical proffessional at the appointment.
I apologise if I have upset anyone.

I have checked thank you. I am not able to have any.

UseOfWeapons · 04/02/2021 15:01

I have several drug allergies, and had the Pfizer vaccine without problems a month ago. These things are discussed at the vaccination appointment, before you even see the needle. If you have had previous reactions, they ask you to stay for 30 minutes afterwards, ordinarily, 15 mins.
They were most interested in things that have given a severe or anaphylactic reaction, not really in rashes. Hope that helps.

I am also currently in hospital and take three immunosuppressants therefore CEV (altho I haven't shielded and have worked throughout and have no intention of shielding). There is no dr either my own consultants, or the large number hospital doctors I'm being treated by currently who say I could have it. Everyone has said a straight out no and it's too dangerous.

Please be very careful what you advise on the internet to strangers. I am able to make my own choices and research and have done, but just because your friend with two epi pens is hopeful she can have it, doesn't mean you can suppose that I likely can too.

Flippyferloppy · 04/02/2021 15:04

My allergy specialist (who has numerous allergies herself) told me she has had the Pfizer and was fine. She took an antihistamine one day before and one hour before

Flippyferloppy · 04/02/2021 15:05

Having said that, she told me I can't have it!

RosesAndLemonade · 04/02/2021 15:07

I feel this thread is actually quite dangerous and am going to report it.

Allergies are very individual and potentially very serious / life threatening. It is not in the least bit relevant to someone with an allergy if someone else with an allergy has been fine.

I do not for one second think that a thread full of anecdotes about how someone with an epi pen might be fine or how someone's allergy specialist had it was fine is helpful. It's dangerous

fellrunner85 · 04/02/2021 15:09

I have severe allergies (like, anaphylaxis, admitted to hospital type allergies).

I had the Pfizer and I am fine.

whatswithtodaytoday · 04/02/2021 15:16

@RosesAndLemonade, I did say check with your own doctor/consultant.

yikesanotherbooboo · 04/02/2021 15:18

Look up Pfizer vaccine and its active constituents firstly to see if it is an out and out contraindication.
If you are severely allergic to elements of it then you can have the AZ vaccine.
If you have a history of anaphylaxis to drugs then you will need to discuss your options with the vaccinators or your GP and may have to take special precautions. Most people with allergies , even a history of anaphylaxis, can still have both vaccines currently available. PP is right that AZ has seen less severe reactions than Pfizer because of a particular chemical present.
To answer your question I am allergic to several drugs and have had Pfizer jab.

RosesAndLemonade · 04/02/2021 15:19
@RosesAndLemonade, I did say check with your own doctor/consultant.
I know but my point is, what on earth does it matter if anyone on this thread has been ok. It's entirely irrelevant. One person with an allergy being ok means absolutely nothing for anyone else with an allergy.

So my issue is not that someone should check with their drs, obviously if you have a serious allergy you should and I hope would do.

But the more messages that appear 'oh xyz has had it and is fine...." Could then end up looking just generally reassuring that it's fine, and with allergies, something so individual and so potentially dangerous, I think a thread like this as a whole (as in no one person's specific reply)...is misleading and potentially very risky

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 04/02/2021 15:28

I have an ibuprofen allergy and a couple of other less severe medication allergies and had the Pfizer one. They went through the allergies and previous reactions before they gave it to me and then made we wait for longer than the 15mins while keeping a close eye on me.

I'd speak to your GP. Having the allergy doesn't rule it out, but it would depend on your individual circumstances.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 04/02/2021 15:30

Yes and I have vaccinated lots of people with allergies. I have also turned a few away and sent them for AZ as the allergy was either to a similar ingredient or to an unknown allergy.

LacyEdge · 04/02/2021 15:33

I have anaphylactic allergies and can assured you Roses that I have no intention of taking random advice off the internet. I’ll take medical advice as and when I get the invitation. There’s no need to report the thread.

I’m hopeful I’ll be able to have it, since allergists in other countries are saying it’s fine for severely allergic people unless you specifically have an allergy to PEG or another component of the vaccine.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 04/02/2021 15:34

I don't agree, Roses. It isn't like anyone reading this thread can just turn up and have the jab. They know there's an issue with allergies and question people with allergies and if there's any doubt turn people away.
