Just wondering if anyone knows the current situation with travelling to Switzerland?
Ideally driving there through france and Germany but wonder if this would be more complex, covid wise?

My DH inherited a property some time ago in Switzerland which sounds lovely but has been a financial burden to us.
We agreed a sale for it a few months ago with the buyer taking ownership at the beginning of April.
Luckily the new owner is happy to take over some furniture as they are renting it out but we/DH still need to go and clear out the personal items and bring stuff back in the car if possible.

If driving is not possible he could maybe get help from his brother in Germany and store stuff there.

Does anyone know if this would be allowed and what the current deal is with travelling before you go and isolating on arrival?
Fine for him to isolate here at home when he gets back.

Keep hearing on the news what they might put in place with asking reason for travel and making people stay in hotels but confused about what the current deal is.

Get keys to a removals company, tell them which spaces you need packing and storing and leave it stored until you can get there.

Everything else can be done remotely and surely your buyer will undertsand the issues.

Is delaying the sale a possibility? Or to transfer whatever is not being kept by new owner into a storage unit.

This counts as an essential trip. The ban on UK visitors to Switzerland will be lifted on 8th Feb so you'll be fine to travel to Switzerland after that date.

If France and Germany won't let you drive through, just fly to Switzerland, hire a care, remove the contents into a self-storage unit, and fly back. You can drive over to collect the stuff another time.

Forgot to add - yes, the quarantine still applies, so you'll just have to factor that into the timing.

Isn't Europe closed to British nationals atm? So even if you are allowed to leave the Uk, will you be allowed into Europe/ the EU? Unlikely.

peak2021 · 04/02/2021 15:05

Surely the sale could be delayed or things put in storage in a part of the house?

Nanniss · 04/02/2021 15:10

If the sale cannot be delayed could you rent the property from the new owners until you can get there to clear it properly? How amenable are they?

RuggeryBuggery · 04/02/2021 15:51

Honestly not sure but I’d be hesitant to delay... was so relieved to find the buyers for a holiday home in a ski tourist area in the middle of a pandemic!
We agreed the sale a couple of months ago but they agreed to wait until 1st April to complete because we had some rental bookings that we wanted to honour.
DH hadn’t yet signed contract and the buyer is getting a bit antsy apparently, he’s now done the notarised document which allows the agent to sign on his behalf

Just want to be shot of it really.
Can hardly remember what’s there but think it’s mainly ski clothes and equipment, plus some boxes of DHs stuff, some personal pictures on the walls and toys for the DC.
Hoping new owners will want all the crockery and cutlery (we’ll have the nice raclette set thanks 😂) and I think they will have furniture and white goods although there were a couple of bits DH was going to take like a bureau and an armchair. Just wonder if there are things there I’ve forgotten about!

DH is a British national but also a German/EU passport holder

The British Embassy should be able to advise you on your rights to travel or not.

If you book the removal company, presumably you could give them a list of things to bring, but they could also video call you from the property so that you could check whether you had forgotten anything, with a quick tour via the phone?

alexdgr8 · 04/02/2021 16:02

do it properly and observe all covid precautions and local laws.
pay a professional company to box up everything and transport it to you in uk.
then you can go through it/ freecycle/ dispose of as wished.
you can instruct re any items purchaser wants.
you must not even think of going there, or getting relatives to do so.
for a ha'penth of tar the ship was lost.

Can you ring the British embassy in Switzerland to ask their advice?
