Vaccine on Monday and I’m scared

Thedarksideofthemoon30 · 03/02/2021 10:03

My manager just rang to say I’m booked in for my
Jab on Monday due to work.

I’m so nervous. I’m majorly overweight and scared I will have a reaction, plus I’m extremely needle phobic. Obviously I’m so grateful to have it but my anxiety is high 😩

doireallyneedaname · 03/02/2021 10:10

There’s no reason to be unless you have severe allergies as stated. Anxiety is a bugger, but you need to remember that is what it is - anxiety. It’s not reality.

YoBeaches · 03/02/2021 10:14

If you are majorly overweight then perhaps try to balance the rationale that the threat of Covid to you is much greater than the threat of the vaccine. You will survive the vaccine, you might not survive the virus.

Keep things in perspective and use your coping techniques.

MammaMiaWallace · 03/02/2021 10:17

Good luck op ♥️

Lampsank · 03/02/2021 10:22

I think a lot feel the same about jabs, those administering them will be mindful of this too. Without minimizing your anxiety as I know it's very real and words won't help, but I bet once you get there you'll be great, and focus on the feeling once you have had it done and you're walking out of the room, knowing you have taken a positive step to trying to protect yourself. You could also get a numbing cream and so you aren't aware at all when it's going in?I find chatting with the person doing them helps, as well as looking away.

tinkerbellsays · 03/02/2021 10:24

Hiya op, I am also massively needle phobic and asked for advice a few weeks back and got lots of helpful tips.... one of the main ones was to buy a numbing cream, Emla - you apply it an hour before and it's meant to help, and also scrunching your toes up and releasing them was also suggested.
Let us know how you get on xx

trunumber · 03/02/2021 10:26

My BMI is 36, I had no side effects at all from the vaccine (but some of my slim colleagues did) I don't think weight is related to side effects

lunar1 · 03/02/2021 10:45

Your weight won't change your reaction to the vaccine. I'm giving the vaccine as a volunteer and I was nervous having it too.

The staff are very well trained for serious adverse reactions, we've not had to use that training yet and the team has done thousands of vaccines.

I would say your feelings are the most common, scared but getting the vaccine anyway. You are doing the right thing.

PurpleDandelions · 03/02/2021 10:48

Just had mine. Absolutely no side effects and really easy smooth systems meant I was only in the centre for 3-4 mins.
Good luck.

lordyanothernamechange · 03/02/2021 10:48

Guy I know is needle phobic and he said it was actually fine, the worst thing was going over it in his head beforehand. So if you can distract yourself as much as possible (chat, game on phone or whatever) beforehand it might help.

muddledmidget · 03/02/2021 10:49

I am not needle phobic when the needles are coming my way (am not overly happy about vaccinating others) so I don't understand fully, but what I would say is the sessions I have seen have been so busy that there are plenty of distractions, and I didn't actually know I'd had my injection. She didn't ask me to sit down or anything, just which arm I wanted it in. I pulled down the sleeve of my cardigan, saw a friend I hadn't seen for ages at another booth, said hello, and the needle was out! I hope yours is as easy as that (and chairs were available if you needed one)

Rillington · 03/02/2021 11:01

I'm overweight and CEV I have not had any side effects at all.

AmelieTaylor · 03/02/2021 11:11

Did you have the flu jab this year?

I did for the first time & it felt like pretty much 'nothing' in fact it was )coincidentally) my GP doing them, if it hadn't been I'd have been concerned it hadn't been done! I've been told the C-19 vax is much the same.

The bastard local injections to have a lump removed were very different!

So not all needles are created equally!

For the vax your weight is irrelevant. Millions have had vax now, unless you have had a reaction to any if they ingredients in the vac previously, there's really nothing to worry about. I'm overweight, over 50 & diabetic and I can't wait to get it, I'm not worried about the vaccine, but I'm very worried about Covid

www.superdrug.com/Health/Medicated-Skin/Sensitive-Skin-Treatment/Emla-Cream-5g-with-x2-Dressing/p/567664

Could you put on Emla cream first so it hurts less?

Skyppy · 03/02/2021 11:45

You are in and out so quickly there is hardly time to think. I didn't feel a thing so I think numbing the area is a bit unnecessary except for placebo effect.

OverTheRainbow88 · 03/02/2021 11:47

Wear some headphones and listen to some music whilst waiting and whilst in the app. Do not look at the needle or at what the nurse or whoever is doing. Always keep your head facing away and music on loud.

Whyistheteacold · 03/02/2021 11:57

Easier said than done, but try not to think about it Op. Don't build it up in your head, it will be over in seconds. Good luck Flowers

PrivateHall · 03/02/2021 12:00

OP as others have said, the only relevance your BMI has is making you higher risk from covid, so it is brilliant you are getting the vaccine. I promise, I genuinely did not feel the needle go in at all. What are you afraid of when it comes to needles and have you used any coping strategies in the past to try and help? If it is just about 'pain' then I promise it really isn't sore, much less painful than blood tests for example Flowers

DoctorYang · 03/02/2021 12:02

Im massively overweight and had the vaccine yesterday, all I have is a bit of a sore arm.

Howmanysleepsnow · 03/02/2021 12:02

Mine is this afternoon. I’m scared too. It’s ok to be nervous.

DianaT1969 · 03/02/2021 12:04

If I was majorly overweight, I'd be queuing to get this vaccine. Honestly, it doesn't take much imagination to know you'll face a lot more needles if you are a hospitalised with Covid. This is an extremely fine needle and a minute about of liquid. Over in seconds. Keep repeating to yourself, "this can save my life, this can save my life'. Also, think about getting on the plane to your next fabulous holiday.

PinkTonic · 03/02/2021 12:06

The needle is very fine. I literally didn’t even feel a scratch and have had zero side effects either.

anotherlongwalk · 03/02/2021 12:10

You'll be fine op, I'm about 5 stone over weight, I had mine at the weekend, you barely feel a thing when they do the injection... it's only a small needle. I've felt a bit tired but that's it. Don't worry about it x

Sillyduckseverywhere · 03/02/2021 12:16

I'm about 4 stone overweight.
I've had both jabs.
I assure you the needle is so fine I didn't even feel the usual "sharp scratch"
According to my smartwatch after the second jab I had a slightly elevated heart rate for a day or two (literally a few BPM higher)
Apart from that, absolutely zero symptoms.
You are going to be absolutely fine.
The staff were lovely too, they are part of something amazing after all Smile

herecomesthsun · 03/02/2021 12:23

I had it yesterday. I didn't even feel it. I did feel very excited!

We got a lovely takeaway after to celebrate.

We are so lucky to have it.

findingschools4myboys · 03/02/2021 12:40

My husband who is in his mid 40’s has it yesterday and has not had any side effects at all. You will be fine 😊
