Will I be in group 6?

I have mitral valve prolapse. Really mild, normal heart function, no symptoms besides the murmur if you listen to my heart with a stethoscope. There’s not a lot of information out there about whether or not it even puts me at an increased risk but I do get the flu jab every year. So does anyone know if people like me are in group 6?

If you get a flu jab, then it's quite likely as it must come under 'heart condition'.

See I don’t know if it does. I mean for the purpose of the flu jab maybe but it’s technically ‘valve disease’ according to the BHF. I say disease but my last scan showed completely normal heart function and the nurse made a passing comment that I’m only really scanned every 5 years as a precaution. I would really like the vaccine though. It makes me nervous that I really don’t know if I’m at increased risk or not. Though I know others probably need it far more.

I think you need to discuss this with your GP as soon as possible

This is a list of underlying conditions that are supposed to be in group 4 or 6:

If you currently have one of the listed underlying health conditions, you are at increased risk from COVID-19:

Chronic respiratory disease, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis and severe asthma;

Chronic heart disease (and vascular disease);

Chronic kidney disease;

Chronicliver disease;

Chronic neurological disease including epilepsy;

Severe and profound learning disability;

Diabetes;

Solid organ, bone marrow and stem cell transplant recipients;

Immunosuppression due to disease (e.g. HIV) or treatment;

Asplenia and splenic dysfunction;

Morbid obesity; or

Severe mental illness.

Solid organ transplant recipients;

People with specific cancers:

People with cancer who are undergoing active chemotherapy;

People withlung cancerwho are undergoing radical radiotherapy;

People with cancers of the blood or bone marrow such as leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma who are at any stage of treatment;

People having immunotherapy or other continuing antibody treatments for cancer;

People having other targeted cancer treatments that can affect the immune system, such as protein kinase inhibitors or PARP inhibitors; and

People who have had bone marrow or stem cell transplants in the last six months or who are still taking immunosuppression drugs.

People with severe respiratory conditions including all cystic fibrosis, severe asthma and severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD);

People with rare diseases that significantly increase the risk of infections (such as severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), homozygous sickle cell disease);

People on immunosuppression therapies sufficient to significantly increase risk of infection;

Conditions involving the spleen, e.g. splenectomy (having your spleen removed);

Adults with Down’s syndrome;

Adults on dialysis or with chronic kidney disease (stage 5);

Women who are pregnant with significant heart disease

@Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum Yeah I’d not be classed as having any of those. They usually just lump me in with the heart conditions for the flu vaxx. But then I’ve seen on other threads that people with milder forms of asthma are being called for theirs. Guess I can call my GP surgery and ask. Smile

I would imagine that you are

As soon as group 6 starts you should be able to go on the booking system & book in, you don't need to wait until you get a letter. If you can't book then maybe ring your GP

I get offered the flu jab every year, so I'm counting on being in G6

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 03/02/2021 00:52

Definitely. First thing in the morning call. Just in case it takes a bit to get you put on list. We are flying down those groups now. Group 6 won't be longSmile

Oh that’s good news then Smile It would give me such peace of mind. Though I do feel a little guilty about it.

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants how do you know when group 6 starts?

Witchgonebad · 03/02/2021 00:57

I have the exact same condition and have been wondering the same.

That list doesn’t seem to cover us, but I wondered if as I’m offered the flu jab I’d automatically be group 6?

I asked my GP right at the start of the pandemic if I was at additional risk (as they were sending people home from work) and they couldn’t tell me. I will call my GP as previous posters have suggested and report back Grin

I’ll be interested to see how you get on. My GP isnt taking calls regarding the vaccine!

AnxiousAlpaca · 03/02/2021 01:07

@Witchgonebad Just looked at the Gov website and now it just states ‘a heart problem’ in the group 6 listing. That makes me think we will get it.

They regularly mention on the news etc when they're starting a new group. My GP website also says (but they say the age rather than the group number)

@AnxiousAlpaca
Your GP sounds a bit crap.

My friend emailed her GP the other day about her adult DS with SEN, she phoned her back but wasn't much help! 🙄

I'm 🤞🏼That if we're on the group to get a letter (text) re annual flu jab, we'll be in the G6 list!

mootymoo · 03/02/2021 07:56

They will make a public announcement when they are calling group 6, you'll get a letter inviting you to attend a mass centre or if you wait your gp will call you in. It's working very well so far if you have transport - the people struggling to get vaccinated currently are those who are relying on district nurses to visit

Spikeyball · 03/02/2021 07:59

"I'm 🤞🏼That if we're on the group to get a letter (text) re annual flu jab, we'll be in the G6 list!"

My GP doesn't contact the flu group about flu jabs. Only the over 65s get letters. Everyone else has to ask and possibly argue as we have to, with the receptionist about.

Spikeyball · 03/02/2021 08:02

We are in the flu group as carers and ds is in it for having severe learning difficulties although he is too young this year for the covid vaccine.

DarceyDashwood · 03/02/2021 08:06

My GP surgery is currently operating a digital
Triage system so you can fill a form in online with your enquiry and someone gets back to you - either a call or email. You could always see if this is an option for your surgery and pop it all down there for them to review? Or just call! I know I prefer the digital method sometimes if I have a ‘non urgent’ enquiry Smile

Zogstart · 03/02/2021 08:17

I’m technically group 6 as I take an immunosuppressant for IBD and I feel like such an imposter when I look at all the serious illnesses on that list. I’m going to feel so guilty if I get the vaccine before my 60 year old dad, especially as I had covid over Xmas and shook it off easily. But I should go when I’m called right?

Of course. I feel guilty too sometimes but then I think by me getting vaccinated when called, it does help others in a roundabout way too. I’ll be getting mine before my parents both in their 60s too, all because my MVP was found by chance when I had a chest infection Smile
