Just that really DD in hospital, he is 90years old and asked if he could have the vaccine , he was told no as it is not government guidance . I will follow it up myself tomorrow with ward but wondered if anyone knows is that correct . I have looked on Gov UK and cannot find the answer.

90 year old DD, daughter or father? If he's 90 he is absolutely eligible

jimmyjo · 02/02/2021 22:40

Opps I may have mixed my initials up 😳but I am referring to my father

Is he unwell? You can't have the vaccine if recently ill.

greatpopcorn · 02/02/2021 22:41

The vaccine isn't available on the wards, I'm not aware of any vaccines given on wards in fact. One of the questions you are asked before being given the vaccine is 'are you generally well', which judging by him being in hospital means he's probably not well enough to have it anyway.

Purplewithred · 02/02/2021 22:42

If he’s over 75 and in England he should have been offered his first jab by now. Why is he in hospital?

greatpopcorn · 02/02/2021 22:42

(Not worth following up with the ward OP, it has absolutely nothing to do with them)

MRex · 02/02/2021 22:43

It depends on what's wrong with him, he won't be able to be given it for certain illnesses. Wait for the morning and talk to the doctors.

jimmyjo · 02/02/2021 22:43

Yes I can't understand why he cannot have it it hospital and to wait until he is discharged , I will try and resolve it tomorrow, if necessary I will ring CCG , I am sure they will advise

He is well enough to be discharged, we are just sorting out the logistics I will try and resolve it tomorrow, thank you for all the advice.

I know certain people in this situation - if they have certain diseases / symptoms, the vaccine is too dangerous to give.

I'm pretty sure they will be doing this to protect him, not just being mean. But do ask a senior medic to explain properly.

OhDearShirley · 02/02/2021 22:48

Because there is specific training for the vaccines that the ward staff won't have done.
If you have vaccinators visiting wards then they will vaccinate far fewer people.
Because he has recently been ill.
If its the pfizer vaccine then there will be nowhere to store it.

Pippioddstocking · 02/02/2021 22:48

The Hospitals do not have supplies of the vaccine to give, it is all kept in central stores to be allocated by the CCGs immediately upon government release.
His G.P surgery will be responsible for allocating and giving the vaccine or arranging for it to be given at a designated hub.
There is no structure in place for it to be currently given in hospital.

Luckingfovely · 02/02/2021 22:49

And also as someone above said - they don't dispense it in the wards, they are simply not geared up for that.

It has been an incredible logistical effort by the NHS to get all their processes and people in place to do the standard vaccine program - there's no way of going outside that.

Do you really need to nitpick? Obviously OP doesnt have a 90 year old child 🤪
Indecisive12 · 02/02/2021 22:57

The vaccines go to the vaccine centres. Not everyone is trained in giving the Covid vaccines and there are redeployed staff trained just to do this. They can’t order a one off vial to give your dad and get someone to come give it. The best thing to do would be book him an appointment at the vaccine centre for when he has been discharged.

greatpopcorn · 02/02/2021 23:07

I mean this kindly, but you will achieve absolutely nothing by phoning the CCG, or even Boris himself, tomorrow. Hope that your father recovers and can have the vaccination once he is well in the community.

Has he been refused the jab via the standard pathway? What type of ward is he on?
