Interesting discussion on R4 about the Russian vaccine. Lancet link
Suggestion that it could protect against new variants if given after Oxford vac, as a second dose.

Or maybe it will kill us all Grin

MarinPrime · 02/02/2021 14:06

No matter how good it is I can't see people in the UK accepting accepting a Russian vaccine called Sputnik V (the V is for victory).
And Conspiracy theorists will go into overdrive Shock.

I'm not thrilled about it as I remember they started using it way before phase 3 trials were completed, so I had sort of written it off as a dud. However at this point I will walk over burning coals just to get back to normality, inject me with whatever the hell it takes I don't care!!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 02/02/2021 14:31

I wouldn't want a Russian vaccine to be completely honest.

ScrapThatThen · 02/02/2021 14:33

I am glad they are including it in trials, no problem as long as the data is transparent.

CoffeeandCroissant · 02/02/2021 14:43

Some potential reasons for caution though:

If the research is verified by MHRA and JCVI says it's better then I'll take it. That goes for any of the vaccines, mix and match or independently.

MarinPrime · 02/02/2021 14:52

I've recently had the Oxford vaccine and am feeling a bit concerned about the new variants reducing efficacy, so would be happy to take Sputnik V as the second jab if deemed safe.

I would refuse a Russian vaccination, I’d take any made in the west

jcyclops · 02/02/2021 15:55

Those saying you would refuse a Russian vaccine - do mean a Russian made vaccine, or one invented in Russia then tested and made in Western Europe?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/02/2021 16:13

If our regulators are happy then I'll take any vaccine from any place, even if it has a bombastic name. How ridiculous of people who would reject it simply because it was developed in Russia.

PurpleDaisies · 02/02/2021 16:14

I trust the MHRA. If they approve it, I’d have it.

MRex · 02/02/2021 16:34

or one invented in Russia then tested and made in Western Europe
For me, that would apply for Chinese vaccines more than Russian, perhaps biased but I'm less certain about the rigour in Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Luckily I think Hancock is determined to have as much produced onshore as possible, so it's unlikely to be an issue.

You want a microchip? That’s how you end up with a microchip Wink

(Me too)

Anything that passes our safety checks, I will happily accept
