If you are BAME, are you taking the vaccine?

Just out of curiosity. As I see so many reports about reluctance in the community. I myself will be taking it when available, and metaphorically kissing the hand of whoever gives it to me.

Yes, absolutely. The risk of side effects of the vaccine scare me far less than the virus itself, which is known to be statistically worse for the BAME community. As the parent of a ECV child, it is important to me for as many people to take up the vaccine as possible to protect those that can’t be given the vaccine. Everyone in my family that has been offered it has taken it (as far as I know).

My Indian husband has had both doses, our children will have it when there is one available.

Most of our friends have had it (we are NHS therefore lots of friends eligible for the vaccine already).

We do know one surgeon not having it through choice but not sure on his reasoning.

My best friend is Somalian and won't. Neither will any of her Somalian/Kenyan family and extended family by the sounds of it.

All living in London and in high cases areas. She often sends me social media fake news videos about the vaccine. I explain the risks. Tell her the facts and why the videos are fake.

Nothing works. Apparently the American nurse on YouTube who is saying she lost the use of her legs after first jab or the doctor on YouTube saying it changes you DNA are right. Not the leading scientists and experts.

So worrying ☹

I don't want to be critical but "BAME" is an unfortunate word especially when used in the phrase "If you are BAME". I don't know how many black people would refer to themselves as black, Asian, and minority ethnic for example.

But it’s not just about black people...

Yes, I will take it when offered as will the rest of my direct family.

Although I do hate the term BAME as it’s so othered.

OverTheRainbow88 · 02/02/2021 11:44

Yes and my parents will and all my aunties and uncles have when offered.

shumway · 02/02/2021 11:47

Yes.

I hear you about the term BAME. I am in fact not British and have only recently arrived here, so really not sure what terms to use. I do not actually refer to myself as BAME, but I used it because the surveys on vaccine reluctance are using it. This is an interesting article which shows they can't all be lumped in one category either.

Glad to hear most are taking it. I am seeing a lot of fake videos and armchair science too. I hope the messaging around it improves.

I don't like term BAME either but I am and will be taking the vaccine. Quite a lot of my family are though.

KylieKoKo · 02/02/2021 23:45

That was meant to say quite a lot of my family are reluctant to.
