Announcement on Scottish schools tomorrow

Kaylasmum49 · 01/02/2021 19:05

Anyone from Scotland got any ideas on what might happen with schools going back in Scotland? Nicola Sturgeon is to be making an announcement tomorrow. I know my 17 year old would be delighted if they go back soon as she works better in the school environment.

Wonder how safe it will be!

@Hibernatingnation I'm sorry you're going through this too. It's broken me seeing him struggle so much.

I'm self employed and have cut back as much as I dare. I am very worried about his mental health and that he might harm himself.

My advice would be to be honest with your employers. It might not help, but it has to be worth a try. Sending you a hug.

Some potential positivity!!! Fingers crossed x

MogOnFoxNightAgain · 02/02/2021 15:14

Happy dance here (about 1 out my 3 children getting to go to school - who could have imagined this would seem like such a great thing a year ago?!)

Peppafrig · 02/02/2021 15:20

My P3 will be back but unless the rest of mine are back I’m not sure we can send him. I’m dropping them off at my 70 year old Mums house at 730 in the morning as I still need to work. I can’t ask her to take all three of them on public transport to drop one off . I wish she would change it so employers have to furlough staff who need childcare .

weebarra · 02/02/2021 15:34

1/3 here too, with my youngest going back.

ParkheadParadise · 02/02/2021 15:49

Yes
Primary 1's back.

3littlewords · 02/02/2021 16:17

@ParkheadParadise

Yes Primary 1's back.
What year is that equivalent in the English system? YEAR 1 here is ages 5-6
peapotter · 02/02/2021 16:22

P1 is half way between reception and Y1.

Happy dance here too. My 3yo will be back at nursery 2 days a week, so one less thing to juggle.

3littlewords · 02/02/2021 16:25

What is the plan going forward for the schools in Scotland then?

CookEatRepeat · 02/02/2021 16:27

I'm so happy for my DB, who has had to stop work completely while his DC are at home.

Not ideal for many families I'm sure, but a start.

Peppafrig · 02/02/2021 16:28

Primary 1 is reception in England so if P1,2,3 are back in Scotland that’s reception , year 1 and 2 in England .

peapotter · 02/02/2021 16:31

Nursery and P1-3 back on 22nd, subject to a review in 2 weeks time. Nurseries have all been closed here (except if 2 key worker parents)

Some secondary back for coursework etc, max 8% of school (how did they work that out!?!)

No news yet on anything else.

It’s the right call imo.

Peppafrig · 02/02/2021 16:33

Some schools were already at 8% with just keyworkers children never mind all P1,2 and 3 added.

peapotter · 02/02/2021 16:35

8% is only for secondary

ThePricklySheep · 02/02/2021 16:36

@Peppafrig

Primary 1 is reception in England so if P1,2,3 are back in Scotland that’s reception , year 1 and 2 in England .
It’s not quite the same age-wise though, is it? Reception is six months younger.
ladylunchalot · 02/02/2021 16:37

Yet again ASN pupils are shafted, the forgotten ones. Makes my blood boil Angry

Hallomi · 02/02/2021 16:37

Great news! Although not sure when we will hear about primary past P3, as ds1 P5 would be very happy too!

Peppafrig · 02/02/2021 16:40

Yeah I think we are on average 6 months older than English children . My own kids have all been 5 before they start P1

Hallomi · 02/02/2021 16:41

Scotland's largest teaching union, the EIS, questioned why the first minister had not mentioned any need for P1-P3 pupils to socially distance, and said it wanted to see the scientific evidence to justify the approach

From BBC ... erm, because P1 to P3 can't SD!!! Insane

GintyMcGinty · 02/02/2021 17:48

I am so jealous. I have a P4 and an S1 who are desperate to go back.

Learning by powerpoint and youtube is garbage.

I am really pleased for the younger kids though.

minniemango · 02/02/2021 17:54

@NoAprilFool is anywhere doing spit tests yet?
PCR tests are swabs, and most workplace tests are lateral flow which is also by swab.

PCR can be saliva too. I think that’s what some local authorities are using for asymptomatic testing, and I know at least one friend doing that at work. A local chemist to me is advertising it

www.newingtonpharmacy.org.uk/services/covid-19-saliva-pcr-testing-edinburgh/

Sounds like it’s a moot point anyway - there are no proposals to have young children regularly tested

ThePricklySheep · 03/02/2021 08:25

@Peppafrig

Well yes. In England reception is 4-5. In Scotland it’s 4.5-5.5, additionally more young ones defer than in England.
