Positive test following vaccine??

My dB had the vaccine last week. He gets tested weekly in work and it came back positive today. He said the infection date was between 21 and 25th. He had the vaccine 20th. He doesn't have any symptoms but did feel unwell after the vaccine.

@MadameTuffington I didnt realise you could get it and test negative for antibodies.

I am sure I had it last march but tested negative for antibodies on october so I assumed was too long.

I have it now (positive test) but nowhere near as ill as last march. I was planning on doing an antibody test to reassure myself it wasnt a false positive.... but you're saying they might not show!? Would that mean Ive no immunity.

Bleurg its so confusing.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 01/02/2021 14:17

@ChocOrange1

Ah really? Yes it was the Pfizer which surprised me as he said he was unwell for a few days. I guess this could be the reason why. What? The reason why he was unwell is because he contracted covid before the vaccination had time to "kick in". Which vaccine he had is irrelevant.
I only mentioned it surprised me as people seem to have less side effects with Pfizer then the Oxford so I was surprised he was was ill for a couple of days, opposed to just a headache, sore arm etc. I know the vaccine doesn't stop you getting it.

It’s because not everyone has the antibodies and they don’t always last if you do etc

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 01/02/2021 14:30

I will test within a few weeks I think.

turnitonagain · 01/02/2021 14:33

@HyacinthBucketandTwoStraws we shouldn’t lie about the vaccine’s effectiveness because of fears that people won’t socially distance.

It will be worse if large numbers of people refuse the vaccine because of online misinformation suggesting it’s essentially pointless.

Ch3rish · 01/02/2021 14:34

What are you asking?

We know that the vaccine doesn't kick in for 3 weeks and that it doesn't stop you catching Covid. There will be loads of people who contract it post vaccine and there will be people who were postive but didn't know it on the day they were vaccinated

Who is lying?

Just pointing out the other side of your argument, for balance!

Lots of people post on here saying they think the vaccine does things it doesn’t, including that it means the imminent end of social distancing.

@Applejackblackjackorfruitsalad

My friend works in HR and was telling me about this the other day. People have been getting covid Iike symptoms for a couple of days after the jab and then have to isolate until they've tested (in case it is actually covid). If you take a lateral flow test, a positive result should be backed up by a PCR test subsequently. Now I've remembered it, I'm not altogether sure that's very helpful to you. I suppose it's entirely possible he has actually got covid and I suppose the only way forwards is he and the household will have to quarantine as per guidelines. I hope he doesn't suffer too much if he has it 💐
This is no longer the case. A positive lateral flow no longer requires a confirmatory PCR. The lateral flow is now treated the same as a positive PCR due to the high specificity of the test.

AFAIK, no vaccine is 100% effective. There will always be some people that it doesn't work for, so frankly whilst the numbers vaccinated are still comparatively low (compared to say MMR or DTAP) and even those people in general aren't fully vaccinated it makes sense to warn them that they won't have 100% immunity yet and that social distancing is still important. That's not the same thing as saying "the vaccine doesn't stop you getting COVID" though. Although I appreciate there are a scary number of people who do misunderstand this!

Thatusernamewastaken · 01/02/2021 15:04

Got the vaccine 2 weeks ago. Got a positive test back today. Currently absolutely no symptoms.

It’s a very fine balance!!
LucyMaxwellDM · 01/02/2021 15:11

I know of about 14 people who’ve had the jab and are now all COVID positive. Mostly asymptomatic however. The vaccine doesn’t stop you getting it, it just stops you getting seriously ill from it (hopefully) and will hopefully reduce transmission (although hasn’t seemed to in this case). Everyone had the jab more than three weeks ago.

LucyMaxwellDM · 01/02/2021 15:13

Not sure where you work but in healthcare they are DEFINITELY backing up positive LF tests withPCR ones.

WoodpileHouse · 01/02/2021 15:19

It sounds as though unfortunately he caught COVID before the vaccine had a chance to produce immunity.

slidingdrawers · 01/02/2021 15:21

Healthcare workers, as some other key groups are exempted from these changes and do still require a follow up PCR, apologies.

trulydelicious · 01/02/2021 15:24

Would you mind sharing the setting in which this occurred?

rwalker · 01/02/2021 15:28

Vaccine in nowhere near 100% and takes weeks to kick in

so really can't understand what the question is

slidingdrawers · 01/02/2021 15:35

The reason for the exemption of certain groups (healthcare staff) is currently due to the self reporting nature of their lateral flow results and chance of inputting error, rather then the tests not being accurate in detecting positive cases. In reality most positive lateral flow = positive for Covid, when circulating levels are high.

MadameTuffington · 01/02/2021 15:41

@HyacinthBucketandTwoStraws I was very much the same - poorly for 2 weeks in March and then another positive test in October but asymptomatic and then a negative AB test (done by a University research team as I’m part of a study) in December - my 18 yr old caught it from me in March, was mildly ill and had a high AB count in October.

No one really understands the way it operates hence all the chaos ...

LucyMaxwellDM · 01/02/2021 15:49

@trulydelicious care home

Can you say which care home?

trulydelicious · 01/02/2021 16:28

@LucyMaxwellDM

Ah, ok, high transmission setting yes

Remmy123 · 01/02/2021 17:37

My friend had vaccine a few weeks ago, tested positive a few weeks later. Feels dreadful. The whole family have it now.
