Covid toes? Chillblains? Cellulitis? Hand foot and mouth?!

DS (4) had 2 swollen, “puffy” feeling, red toes on Weds morning, but no pain or itching. No obvious cause. Went to nursery and was well in himself- though did need his inhaler when he was out playing.

Thursday they were rather worse and they looked bruised, so fearing a hairline fracture of his foot kept him at home, spoke to GP and sent pics, who suggested chillblains (he’d had an incident with a woodland bog at the weekend) or an infection, and started some antibiotics.

Friday worse again- now purplish looking bruises were pronounced. Spoke to doc again who asked for a urine sample (he’s had some diabetes like symptoms unrelated to this) which was clear. Told to keep on with ABs.

Today- swelling has gone down, toes still look bruised, but on his OTHER foot, he’s developed a couple of small weird blisters, some reddish patches. and the pad of one toe is sloughing off Shock .

I’m wondering whether it’s HFM - but have also had him tested for Covid this afternoon just in case.

He’s not in pain, and he’s well in himself- splash emotional and his asthma seems to be triggered easily by the heating, but that’s normal for the time of year....

Any ideas? Have attached some pics.... one of the toes that started the whole shenanigans, one of the sloughed off toe pad, and one of one of the weird blistery thing.

Have to add, am fanatical about foot health and care- we like long walks and don’t own a car, plus... just nothing more miserable than a blister- so shoes, wellies etc all fit well, no rubbing etc etc

I get chilblains most years and they do look like that but they are usually sore and itchy. Any other Covid symptoms?

TheKeatingFive · 31/01/2021 20:42

My only contribution is that it doesn’t look like hand foot and mouth. DS had that twice and it was much more widespread and red.

AnaisNun · 31/01/2021 20:49

@Waxonwaxoff0

Not really. He has a persistent cough every year between Nov and March (starts with the first cold of the season, sticks around until the weather warms up) which is present and seems to be responding to inhalers/ doesn’t seem markedly worse than usual for time of year.

Looks a bit tired. Bit emosh. But no fever, no loss of smell etc., no upset stomach.

My GP thinks we both actually had Covid in March last year but were never tested. If so, it could make sense that he could have the toes and no other covid symptoms and be positive....

Eeshhhk. Bloody covid. Feels like EVERYTHING might be covid atm...

The heel looks like a verruca that my daughter has had for ages.

AnaisNun · 31/01/2021 20:53

@DinosaurDiana

Is that username a reference to Dino Dana?! We LOVE Dino Dana in this house.

Yeah my mam said verruca for that one... weird that it’s appeared at the same time if so but his nursery is often barefoot so not beyond realms of possibility ... what’s the advice these days? Treat them or leave them?

Athletes foot is a possibility if his feet have been wet. My DD has had similar and that's what I decided in the end. I've been using canesten hc cream 1% and it's getting better. Might be worth asking at a pharmacy

@stressbucket1

Ohh... good call! Hadn’t even thought- figured that was one to tackle in the teen years Grin

If covid test is negative I’ll follow that up - thanks

This looks exactly like my four year olds foot as well. I also thought covid but no other symptoms. He has had this before in previous years in the winter. The doctor thought chilblains I think. I think his feet had got wet whilst playing outdoors. He says it doesn't hurt. It does look pretty manky but it clears up fairly quickly and only occurs a couple of times through the winter

Smidge001 · 31/01/2021 20:59

Heel definitely looks like a verruca to me.

DinosaurDiana · 31/01/2021 21:00

The peeling toes can be caused by sweaty feet, like wearing trainers without socks.
But the bruised toes are a mystery. I assume no one has stood on his toes, or he hasn’t dropped something on his toes ?
Re the varruca - nothing I have tried has worked.

user1467486752 · 31/01/2021 21:18

Banana skins fleshy side up gaffa taped to the foot over night works for verrucas. Weird but true! Not sure my child would let me do this to them but yours might be a bit more compliant

isurvived3under2 · 04/02/2021 20:34

Did you get your test result OP?

isurvived3under2 · 04/02/2021 20:35

Sorry should have tagged @AnaisNun!

I believe my children have Covid toes at the moment. They look just like the purple bumps in your picture.

DH and I are just recovering from confirmed Covid. Our 2 children aged 10 and 12 have tested negative (3 times) but I do believe they have Covid toes.

The Zoe symptom tracker says Covid toes can often be the only symptom a young person has and they may or may not test positive.

We've isolated as a family, of course, because of the positive tests so we've treated the kids as if they are positive, despite the negative tests. I'm hoping the toes will just heal over the next few weeks. Other than being itchy the kids aren't bothered at all.

That's really interesting - the COVID toes persisting several months after confirmed COVID.
chickadeeeeeeeee · 05/02/2021 19:56

waverless my daughter's toes have been really sore. She had swelling and pus filled sacs on some which then burst and peeled.

The Dr suggested keeping them warm and moisturised.

They are getting better now Smile

Hey all-

Just a quick update- DS tested negative for Covid (again- his 4th test in 8 weeks- he has asthma so we’ve had to test him after a few exacerbations, and now this... as he’s at nursery we can’t be too careful)

His toes are sort of better- he developed a couple of weird looking blisters on the other foot in the last few days, but the original red and purpleness and swelling has gone, leaving what looks like the sort of thick wrinkled skin of a healing burn.

As an aside, I’m covid testing weekly (local testing initiative as were in an area that’s done quite badly) and have been negative every time.

Interestingly though, we both had covid symptoms back last March (DS just had a cough, I had sore eyes, headache, upset stomach, very sore back and ribs, fatigue and then a horrific cough for 3 weeks, after which I’ve had palpitations and unexplained abdominal pain sporadically ever since- doctor has muttered about long covid but since I didn’t have a test at the time it’s hard to say).

We both had very mild symptoms of a standard cold about a month ago- except I was bone shatteringly tired with it (we both tested negative)- now wondering if maybe we did in fact become exposed to covid (again?!) but our immune systems kicked in, and this was DS’ immune response? Not sure if that’s even medically correct Grin

Who knows? Guess we never will....

Anyway- hope everyone’s toes heal well!
