What are the chances of being positive if teen has been told they were ‘close contact’?

Through school. Just wondering what the chances are of getting it when you have been told to self isolate due to being in close contact? Obviously we are following the guidelines, this is the first time for us to have this so I’m just wondering!

Anybody?

It’s happened to DS twice, neither time did he get Covid. It was a bloody long 10 days inside though!

Dogwoes1 · 31/01/2021 17:41

@Donotgogentle how ‘close’ a contact was he with others? Mine has been in one room with the child all day.....

Certainly not guaranteed. Even being in very close, prolonged contact would not mean a 100% chance of him catching it. But the chance is significant enough that he needs to stay home.
I think it would be very difficult to put a number on though... especially without knowing how close the contact was.

The closer and the longer the contact, the higher the risk. But even then luck/chance still comes into it.

In the same teaching group as the boys who tested positive, they sent the whole class home.

No one can tell you, there's no way to quantity the chance of one person passing it to another. You could probably find the answer at a population level but I dont see that as being very helpful.

Tbh I'm a little surprised that after 10 months this isn't common knowledge. All you can do is reduce the chance as much as possible but you can't tell what the chance is.

Sorry I appreciate the question is how long is a piece of string, just panicking a little as I’m a LP. So one day end of last week, just him and other student in a classroom all day. Windows open no masks, teacher sort of ‘floating’ in and out (special needs school so things are a little different to mainstream)

He had only just gone back, has been at home a long time previous.

@Dogwoes1 my sons teacher tested positive on the Saturday having been teaching my son on the Friday and they had spent over an hour in a music recording studio (teacher and 3 other students) with no masks and no social distancing. I was convinced my son (17) would get it belly he completed isolation as did his classmates with no sign of catching it

Dogwoes1 · 31/01/2021 17:47

Thanks @Kayjay2018 I’m just a little panicked as we have been quite isolated previous and he has only just gone back

DS got it in November from a close contact at school. In the end there were almost 50 cases out of the 150 boys in his year. Sounds like bad odds but obviously that's 100 boys who didn't get it.

Dogwoes1 · 31/01/2021 17:52

Thanks. If he had contact on Thursday, how long would it take for him to show symptoms if he was going to get ill?

OP posts:
Tomatel · 31/01/2021 17:56

Dogwoes 1
Symptoms usually show 5 or 6 days after contact with infected individual but it can take up to 14 days.

Dogwoes1 · 31/01/2021 20:09

Ok thanks, so hopefully another couple of days and we will be in the clear...

Ds say next to a child for 5 days (in every class) whilst his mate waited for the result of an asymptomatic test. His was positive and even with 5 days of constant contact ds did not get covid. I don’t think it passesas easily as it’s made out

Db has it now and no one in family has it and we have asymptomatic testing here so they’ve had a couple of tests already and they’re not isolating on house etc

Dogwoes1 · 31/01/2021 20:26

Interesting.... he had a later flow test done the last day he was at school but that was done in the morning so he ‘could’ have caught it after the test...

Re testing, for what it's worth, we only got DS tested because so many of his close friends had tested positive. He wasn't displaying any symptoms you would normally associate with Covid, apart from a tickly cough in his throat. When he got his positive result the rest of us were all tested and all got negative results, despite DH & me feeling unwell and DS2 losing his sense of taste. We are part of the ONS study and had 2 more tests which again were all negative. However, 2 weeks later DH developed a chest infection which was bacterial and was so ill he was sent to hospital in an ambulance. Our friend who is a GP is fairly sure that we did all have Covid and DHs infection was a secondary opportunistic infection. I think it's really hard when so many people ( kids especially) have the virus but are asymptomatic and it's also clear the tests can be quite unreliable.
Pastanred · 31/01/2021 21:06

I think in our case it was because none have symptoms so in conjunction with negative tests it’s likely they are negative

Ds mate tested postivie on pcr as part of ons study so his was likely positive yet he had no symptoms and as such didn’t have to isolate between test and result

So for 5 days ds and his mate sat side by side in every lesson

Ds had pcr in school few days later as part of study and a lft 10 days after and both negative and never got ill

I know so many who’s family members had it yet they never it’s crazy!

Dogwoes1 · 31/01/2021 21:12

I wish I could get him tested but he doesn’t have symptoms so I know I can’t. Wish there was a ‘peace of mind’ test Grin

We were told my son was a close contact on the Tuesday and he started with symptoms on Saturday. None of the rest of his friendship circle who were isolating got it. Really depends on a number of factors.
