So landlord has to have a electricity certificate or something to that affect, every 5 years, it's now up, he has said someone is coming round on Tuesday to do, and the electric has to be off for 5 hours.
Normally I would be fine with it, but I'm CEV and shielding, my husband works from home so is going to his parents to work, I was going to go for a nice 5 hour walk with our 2 year old but the weather is going to be horrendous, what would you do in this situation?

5 hours? For what exactly? I have never heard of anything like this in my life...

Confuzzlediddled · 31/01/2021 15:53

Why does it have to be off for 5 hours? Our landlord had a safety check done on our home a few months ago and it was literally off for minutes? I just stayed on another floor of the house and kept away!

Santaiscovidfree · 31/01/2021 15:55

We are having such a check soon. My dc are looking forward to a day off home schooling!!
Flask and laptop? They will be wearing masks op.. Go for a walk, home for a hot chocolate and snuggle in bed and watch a film. Your toddler may have a nap.
And so can you!!

I have no idea, and just to add the landlord is actually my FIL, and my husband won't say no to him ( we do have proper contract and pay rent each month)

We've just had it done. Ours was on and off as needed. Took about 2 hours.
It's a legal requirement so has to be done.
Our guy was good when needed to make a bottle he turned the power on.

lu688 · 31/01/2021 15:59

Thanks @EatingAllTheCookies that's good to know!

I think I would ask to postpone until rates are lower or I’d had the vaccine TBH. I think that’s reasonable. Unless there is a possibility there is a risk issue with the electrics.

StrangeAddiction · 31/01/2021 16:00

I would pick a room and have enough food/drinks toys/tv and stay in there with the door firmly shut until the absolute last minute when they need access to that room. All the other rooms would have the windows wide open and I'd have a mask ready for when I needed to go in the other room. While s/he is doing their thing in the chosen room I'd be wiping down all surfaces, sockets, handles etc that he'd likely touched.

When I had my electrical check they were only in each room a few minutes, I think they spent most of their time at the electric fuse box.

Msmcc1212 · 31/01/2021 16:00

Oh. Didn’t realise it was a legal requirement...

Pebbles574 · 31/01/2021 16:02

The problem is that it is a new legal requirement that existing tenancies need to get them done before April (I think) and there is a risk of a shortage of electricians to do them if they are all left too late.
A landlord can face a steep fine if not done, so that's why your FIL will be keen to get it done. 5 hours does sound extreme though - perhaps query that?

bumbleymummy · 31/01/2021 16:07

Do you have a laptop as a back up plan for entertainment? Just make sure it’s fully charged 😊

frozendaisy · 31/01/2021 16:35

Go to parent's house with DH.

It could be classed as an emergency perhaps.

ThisTooShallPass20 · 31/01/2021 21:24

I'm also CEV and I declined when our electricity provider wanted to come and install smart meter. I also declined having the gas certificate done at the moment. Both of these things obviously have to be done eventually but I'm not allowing anyone inside our house until I'm fully vaccinated. I've come too far to let my guard down now.
