Advised to return to work 10 days after Oxford vaccine

My cousin is CEV and just had the Oxford vaccine. She has been advised to return to work in 10 days time. That sounds much too soon. Is that advice correct?

It doesn't start working for a few weeks and you don't get full protection before the 2nd jab. Doesnt sound right to me.

herecomesthsun · 31/01/2021 14:49

1 My advice was to continue shielding

2 has she had both doses? as she is not very protected if not

3 is the advice from occ health? If so, could she speak to her GP instead?

Kitkat151 · 31/01/2021 14:50

If she’s shielding she should stay at home at least until after the shielding date ends and even then it might be extended

Kitkat151 · 31/01/2021 14:52

The date is currently 21st feb.....but if extended shielded will receive email from Matt Hancock

InterfectoremVulpes · 31/01/2021 14:52

Who told her that?

AlexaShutUp · 31/01/2021 14:52

Doesn't sound right to me at all.I thought immunity only began to kick in 3 weeks after the jab. Also, has she had the second shot yet? She isn't fully immunised if not.

As I understand it, all the advice is that people shouldn't change their behaviour after being vaccinated, so if she has been advised to shield, she should continue to do so until advised otherwise by her doctor. I appreciate it's not that simple though, if she is under pressure from a shitty employer.

minniemango · 31/01/2021 14:53

Who advised her? A specialist for her condition, her GP, her boss?

Lurkingforawhile · 31/01/2021 14:54

Seems like they've got confused. Ten days is isolation for covid symptoms. As others said you don't get protection until two to three weeks after the vaccine and full protection will be the same period after the second dose. So possibly not till April

Kitkat151 · 31/01/2021 14:54

I’m CEV....I’ve been told by my employer I will be WFH until 2022 at the earliest

notevenat20 · 31/01/2021 14:54

She is CEV but not immunosuppressed.

www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-on-shielding-and-protecting-extremely-vulnerable-persons-from-covid-19/guidance-on-shielding-and-protecting-extremely-vulnerable-persons-from-covid-19

Says:
Even if you have had both doses of the vaccine, you should continue to follow this shielding advice, until further notice as we continue to assess the impact of vaccination among all groups. The people you live with should continue to follow the public health rules and guidance as long as they are in place, including if you have received the vaccine and also if they have received the vaccine.

Kitkat151 · 31/01/2021 14:56

Is she an official shielder? does she get the Matt Hancock emails and letters?

Spied · 31/01/2021 14:59

I thought we got most of our protection from the first jab- but not until 2/3 weeks after it. ( Didn't Whitty say this at the last conference?)
However, I believe the shielding should continue to shield.

MrsAudreyShapiro · 31/01/2021 15:00

Who gave her this advice?

Kitkat151 · 31/01/2021 15:01

Correct on both accounts

Oops wrong thread, I’ve reported it. Sorry! I also agree that CEV should definitely continue to shield- that’s been advised to me .

Kitkat151 · 31/01/2021 15:05

@PurpleBirch

Thanks so much for this thread. I’m CEV and saw this thread last night, the website let me book and I’m just back from having the vaccine today! Feels like the start of a new era, so happy!
This thread was onLy started 20 minutes ago🤔 very glad you’ve had your vaccine though.... yes new beginnings !
notevenat20 · 31/01/2021 15:15

Yes she is an official shielder.

The advice was given at the vaccination centre.

QueenPawPaws · 31/01/2021 15:25

Definitely wrong, it says both online and in the letter to continue to shield

RosesAndLemonade · 31/01/2021 15:29

My MIL has been shielding and had her first dose. She was told to continue sheilding until the first 15million doses had been given out and she had had her second!!

Ten days does not sound like a good plan!

notevenat20 · 31/01/2021 15:42

Thanks all. I will suggest she contacts her GP for a second opinion. She would love to go back to work so I don't know if that will work.

I am CEV and have the official shielding letter and it says 21st February. It is advisory shielding so it's up your cousin. I am in a higher risk job so I wouldn't feel safe. It is a worry though that the vaccination are giving ECV the wrong information.
