Covid - the result a (accidental) lab leak - don't shoot me down, genuine concerns

I can't be the only one worrying about the weird coincidence that the Wuhan lab was so close to the mass spreader event of the Wuhan wet market.

What about the gain-of-function research that has focused on a number of viruses and looking at how they can become more transmissible i.e. in 2011 when two studies were suppressed involving H5N1 viruses that had been modified to allow airborne transmission from ferret to ferret.

I'm surprised main media are not focusing more on this...too many coincidences and given that the 1977/78 Russian flu was most likely due to an (accidental?) lab leak it's not inconceivable that Covid was too:

It's not that it's impossible for it to be a lab leak, but that there's no reason to think it was. We've been getting diseases for millions of years and viruses have always mutated.

Anything you catch - from measles to the common cold - 'could' be the result of a leak from a lab studying it.

Still while you're at it. I can find no evidence that Mad Cow disease was not released from a UK lab. Perhaps it didn't start with a misfolded protein after all and perhaps we invented the story of farmers feeding contaminated meat to other cows to cover it up.

If that should turn out later to be true I want the credit. Grin

@Moondust001

Sigh. I am torn between "it was released by aliens wanting to colonise the planet" and "I wish I could be abducted by aliens providing they agree never to bring me back".
Maybe the viruses are the aliens @Moondust001? Grin There is even a theory that life on Earth was seeded from space, so the planet was colonised by "aliens".

I want the credit if it turns out that Covid was present in the US/then spreading over Europe and being hidden as vape related illnesses due to failure to identify a novel virus because they weren't looking for one until the Chinese looked and found one.

If Porton Down were bioweaponising fucking around with BSE and it just happened that they had a lab at the epicenter of the outbreak - then you might be right.

The implicated vape oil came from ... China. 😉

When I first heard it I dismissed it as a conspiracy theory. I have since seen some articles which tend to suggest that it could actually be true. I have no idea whether we will ever find out, though it would be very interesting. I have a hard time believing the bat - pangolin - wet market theory, but what do I know?

Spiratedaway · 01/02/2021 19:15

Accidental leak from lab ... China have lied about the amount dead and they won't let scientists in (have now ) as this will be proved ... they "got rid" of the whistle blowers.. that is my theory ..they are horrible ange at the ccp not the people , the Muslim camps , one child policy and what going to Hong Kong so would not put anything past them they want to rule the world

Spiratedaway · 01/02/2021 19:16

@questioningalways

I've only been using MN for a month of so and I'm still surprised at some of the comments. Guess I need to get used to the rather nasty tone of some of these....I just wonder what kind of people write these kind of comments? What kind of lives do they have to be so unkind? I honestly never would write comments like these to anyone, but with the veil of anonymity people feel they can address you in a way they'd never do to your face.

Anyhow, you can't say it's a conspiracy theory, that's just a lazy and uneducated brush off.

People are nasty on here

This? Still?

So you're not interested, so why click on the thread, just to be rude to someone who is? How pathetic.

It's a perfectly valid question OP. I too have been a bit bewildered in the lack of interest in the origin of the virus. I'm hugely interested, part of my job involves preventing the spread of zoonotic diseases.
And for those saying why does it matter, of course it does, maybe that knowledge could prevent future pandemics.

Zzzexhaustedzzz · 01/02/2021 20:02

I agree OP.
I have not read the links here but did read a fair bit before and against the idea last year.
Biological weapons, I remember in 2011 when I finished uni, there were countless jobs available working on them. I find that very scary.

You're hearing an awful lot of zebra hooves out there OP.
