Social distancing to last all year

Santastealer · 31/01/2021 08:23

The media this morning are reporting on a report given to government saying social distancing will need to be in place all year and rules remain until December.

But what then? What do they expect to be different by September?

Last August I was able to go on holiday with my family as a group of 8, are thy suggesting this year this won’t be possible? If not why was it ok last year when we didn’t have vaccines but this year it’s not ok when we do?

I’m thoroughly fed up of not being able to see my family and I need to feel an end point is in sight.

I honestly can’t understand how adults can think that children missing their 8th and 9th birthday party (as my child will be doing) isn’t a big deal?
As adults you have had plenty of birthdays, and plenty of adult birthdays yet to come. Childhood is short. So short. You can never get the excitement abs innocence of these years back, never. Once it’s past its gone.
Most Adults (not talking elderly or near the end of life!) can have plenty of adult years in the future. Children don’t - as children! Which is why is such a huge travesty for them in particular.
Really, if you can’t see that then I would be willing to bet you don’t have any children (or can’t imagine this scenario happening when your children were young).
Is my child going to be a stroppy teen before parties are allowed again (and therefore not want one?)

I think some people are really really scared of the vaccines, scared of them working and allowing us our freedoms back.

WeirdLoverWilde · 31/01/2021 16:21

And if you become asymptomatic spreaders, so what, right? Others you infect can just fuck off

Frankly, yes, once all those who are at risk have been vaccinated. How long would you like us all to stay at home hugging our yoga mats? Another six months? A year? Forever? The whole point of restrictions is to protect the most vulnerable who may need hospital treatment if they catch covid. Once that's not an issue, neither is it an issue for people to live as normally as they wish to. We've kept our end of the deal for almost a year ffs.

@PerveenMistry I've seen you on other threads berating mask exempt people and telling them they're disease vectors who shouldn't leave the house. Your posts sound incredibly dramatic and doomy. Do you suffer with health anxiety, or are you CEV?

Completely agree with this. My daughter has her 4th Bday party cancelled as just after lockdown 1. She won't have a 5th this March either. I've just invited close family to a zoom party for my babies 1st birthday too. Some of them have met him once. It's devastating. These milestones matter.

I am definitely scared of people in the top priority groups getting the vaccine and then relaxing on following the rules. I’ve saw lots more elderly people in the supermarket and town this week, masks all cock-eyed chatting to people they’ve bumped into with no distancing at all. I don’t begrudge them some freedom but it seems it’s at the expense of those further down the priority groups, who can catch the virus and have no protection at all.

The thought of an increasing number of people “relaxing” when all the baby boomers have been jabbed, I’ve got to be honest, it scares me.

BeakyWinder · 31/01/2021 16:34

@Mulhollandmagoo

To be honest, holidaying in the UK would be a good thing, massively beneficial to the UK economy. Which with Brexit would be really really helpful. It's just really shitty for people who have family abroad.

I know....not at all the point of the thread 😂

I would if it wasn't extortionate! £800 for a week in a rainy cottage in England vs. £500 for a week in the sun abroad.. no brainer for me.
WouldBeGood · 31/01/2021 16:36

I’m off to the first sunny country that I’m allowed to go to as soon as the over 65s are done

So we've always been told, but there's a major problem with this called the NHS waiting list, now standing at over 4.5 million

For obvious reasons that'll also be "a major burden on the NHS", and though it's been asked repeatedly, the lockdown lovers have never said whether they'd want restrictions to last until this too is cleared

Funny that Hmm

CuriousaboutSamphire · 31/01/2021 16:36

That's fine. DH, the dog and I will happily take your UK holiday cottage. 😁

Enjoy! Smile I can see the appeal of being able to take pets. It's a shame, I would like to explore more of the UK.. buying a campervan might be cheaper in the long run if I can get dp on board!

Yoga mats. Ffs.
And who was it who asked what is preventing you seeing your family? Are you aware of what's going on, the restrictions that are law?

The point of restriction is to reduce the spread and the mutations. We let the virus get ahead of us thanks to selfish people who wouldn't follow rules. Bow it's morphing to outwit our vaccines and remedies.

You'll see. These well could be the good old days, in retrospect. I do some (non science) work for a veteran doctor, immunologist who trained under Dr Fauci, and he is extremely concerned about the variants.

But do keep denying science.

BeakyWinder · 31/01/2021 16:56

On a more positive note - 600,000 were vaccinated yesterday, how amazing is that.

Someone who mistakenly thought they were smart.

It says so much about what someone’s life must have been like previously that they’re able to downplay the government restricting people’s social interactions for a year as if it’s not that big a deal and not that much of a sacrifice. And they actually think it makes them sound cool rather than utterly tragic.

PerveenMistry · 31/01/2021 16:56

@Mif4

What the hell is wrong with people saying that those with covid related health issues who decline the vax shouldn't be treated?

You would have to do this across the board

Overweight/obese- no help if you get diabetes

Drink alcohol - no help if your liver or kidneys fuck up

Smoked past or present - no cancer treatment.

Those that think like this are heading down a slippery slope.

No doubt these are the same people who think if someone doesn't wear a mask they deserve to die of covid.

Enough of all the bullshit "I wear my mask to protect you" - but then wish Ill health on anyone who thinks differently to you.

Humanity is being fucked over left, right and centre.

Obesity and the like aren't contagiously deadly to other humans. Do you truly not see the difference?
Bollss · 31/01/2021 16:58

Obesity can be very deadly to humans.

You're clearly only bothered about things that are contagious because they might kill you. You don't give a fuck about things killing others, clearly.

sofiaaaaaa · 31/01/2021 16:59

I don’t mind as long as proper lockdown is lifted. If life goes back to how it was last summer before the early closures were introduced/around the time of the eat out to help out offer, I’d be ecstatic

Would you ban them for ever then?

School is currently a luxury only certain members of society have access too, should that stay forever too? These arguments quickly become ridiculous.

Even children that don't have parties often spend time with loved ones. "Parties" don't often cost very much money but still mean the world to a child.

My children love having a party with friends but are able to cope without it quite easily. It's not like we've pretended their birthdays didn't happen this year. Just had family-only parties instead of big things with friends.

I'd be disappointed if not having a party was some sort of major trauma for them tbh.

RedToothBrush · 31/01/2021 17:28

No I certainly wouldn't but ultimately this particular issue comes down to parents managing children's expectations properly.

The kids are being wound up from somewhere about the possibility of a party.

Also if we still have restrictions on large gatherings until next year, just do something different. Plenty of kids do a birthday treat with one or two friends. Just do that.

All this business of my child is missing out because 'birthday parties' is ridiculous.

Did you have a party every year as a kid? Can you remember every party you had as a kid? Can you remember most of the parties you had as a kid?

No one says you have to have a birthday party FOR your birthday anyway. Have a Halloween Party instead. Or a 'end of bloody covid' party. Or a pointless party just for the sake of having a party because its July (or whenever).

The sheer lack of imagination and how parents are playing a role in making a kid disappointed by the lack of party is frustrating. As is the complete lack of awareness that its not a right of passage for so many kids out there - there will be plenty of parents who will not be able to afford a birthday party this year.

Its a massive fucking luxury.

Agreed, you are correct, but I am not sure how this is relevant to the current discussion?

The point is that our lives are incredibly restricted at present, to the point where it's not normal. Childhood is incredibly short and this current generation will miss out on so many experiences. Museums, zoos, libraries, everything is closed. They can't play with friends or see their extended families either. It's not a question about money this time.
