If you have had covid or know someone who has had covid, can I ask what sort of cough they had. My Dad has tested positive and is coughing up green flem and thinks its normal in covid and doesn't want to bother the dr. Thank you

I've had covid and was coughing up green gunge. Definitely get a test.

Notthisnotthat · 31/01/2021 08:17

Oh just reread your post I didn't need antibiotics

PullingAtTeeth · 31/01/2021 08:17

I had a dry cough. No phlegm.

UnusuallyUsual · 31/01/2021 15:07

Thanks ladies... one of you did one of you didnt 😁 Anyone else have a cough?

Kitcat122 · 31/01/2021 15:29

Yes dry cough.

starrynight19 · 31/01/2021 15:31

Mine was like a dry hacking cough. But my chest was bad with it.

daisydalrymple · 31/01/2021 15:31

I had a cough. Not the continuous cough we expect though. Not always dry either. More clear / white phlegm for me.

SpnBaby1967 · 31/01/2021 15:32

I just felt like my throat was sort of scratched and that made me get a dry cough.

Toorapid · 31/01/2021 15:32

I just had a tickly cough, but I wouldn't say green phlegm, on it's own, is a cause for concern, I quite often get that with a cough/cold.

Toocold · 31/01/2021 15:35

I thought green phlegm was indicative of a chest infection, I’m asthmatic and that’s what I have previously been told, I think it might be worth contacting the doctor as they can prescribe antibiotics remotely if they feel they’re needed.

Toocold · 31/01/2021 15:36

I suppose it depends how much there is as well.

UnusuallyUsual · 01/02/2021 19:29

Thanks everyone.
He doesn't have a temperature and his oxygen levels are ok. I will keep an eye on him.

jb23newmum · 01/02/2021 19:33

I am currently positive and I started with a headache which wouldn’t go and the cough kicked in after a few days - it’s dry with a very bad sore throat

Furloughwonder · 01/02/2021 19:33

My friend had covid AND a chest infection - so antibiotics clear the infection & you feel stronger to fight the covid

Zzzexhaustedzzz · 01/02/2021 19:35

I had a chest infection and needed antibiotics. I was much better once I had started them.

PuzzledObserver · 01/02/2021 19:36

I had a few phlegmy days in the middle, when I was hacking really hard to shift something, but it was white. The rest of the time it was a dry cough.

Green gunge suggests a secondary bacterial infection. He could look at NHS online in the first instance, that will take him through triage questions. He might then be advised to ring 111 or his GP.

Neenan · 01/02/2021 20:01

I had a pathetic, very occasional tickley cough for a couple of days. That was it.

MrsWonderland · 01/02/2021 20:01

My Covid symptoms started with sinus pain and I ended up with a cough and a lot of phlegm. The phlegm was clear but I also had blood in it a couple of the days, no doubt from coughing so much. I should have called 111 but didn't. Luckily I was ok.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 01/02/2021 20:07

I had headache, sinus pain and then cough started. Which was very phlegm but not green. No sore throat or anything

The rest of household all got sore throats, some got coughs but not all. Everyone got a headache. However they got no sinus pain or phlegm.

Emeraldeyes20 · 01/02/2021 20:11

You need to ring his Dr ! Green phlegm is a sign of an infection, it may or may not be Covid but still needs reporting to his GP

Meltedwellie · 01/02/2021 20:13

It is possible he has had Covid and now has a secondary infection so asking the doc about antibiotics would be a wise move.

BusMum79 · 01/02/2021 21:22

As others have said, could well be a secondary infection. DH and I had it back in March. He is basically never ill and had a high fever and terrible cough, for me it was loss of taste and smell, cough and chills. We fought it on our own for about 10 days, but I clearly remember DH started coughing up green phlegm and I had awful green mucous (sorry gross) like a sinus infection. We rang our GP who instantly prescribed antibiotics for us both over the phone - we started feeling much better, and stronger to fight the Covid. It really made a huge difference to us both.

BusMum79 · 01/02/2021 21:24

Ps Hope your dad starts to feel better soon.

VerbenaGirl · 01/02/2021 21:25

It was a kind of small dry breathy cough, no phlegm.

Rowgtfc72 · 02/02/2021 08:27

Dry cough. With pain on breathing.
Only time I've coughed up green chunks was a bad chest infection.
