What really happens to spare vaccines?

My friend today has claimed that she has booked a “spare” vaccine for tomorrow - apparently there are loads free because of no turn ups.

Is this true - she’s sent me the text message with her booking on and it looks legit?

Wouldn’t they try and fill the spaces with 65 year olds first?

My friend is 42 no health issues not in NHS or social care.

Our surgery has a back up list of people to call from the next priority group and will call at the end of the day and if you are able to get down there, you get the vaccine. If not you remain on the list as per normal.

So nice try hun but no jab for you.

You sound like a nice friend...!

Frazzled2207 · 31/01/2021 17:22

Oh dear well that doesn’t surprise me. It sounds like a bit of a cock up - I’m all for making sure it doesn’t get wasted but inviting “friends and family” regardless of age seems wrong.
Not her fault though, I imagine many of us if offered in this way would go.

@OverTheRainbow88 I’m the best!

@Dubiousdebbie

Right update time.

Apparently the friend who had forwarded on the booking link text my friend asking her to cancel, apparently too many friends and family of nhs staff had booked with the link.

Link was legit as it linked to my friends nhs and email details (for those asking it sent a confirmation of the first and second jab dates)

Interestingly this situation has appeared on local social media today with NHS asking people not to turn up at the vaccine hub.

I honestly think a few members of staff have either got wind of a loophole in the system or they have genuinely been told they can share the link to a few people as there have been so many no shows.

So nice try hun but no jab for you.

How did they not already know this?

It was first reported maybe two weeks ago, an MP was able to use the link to book a jab he wasn't entitled to, it was all over the news that the links were being abused and he raised it with the company that runs the system.

At the hub I volunteer at, when you check in for your first jab and your details are entered on the computer, a time & date for your 2nd dose is automatically generated so you know when you are coming back.

I suspect this translates as, "Ohhhhh shit. We've had a stern email from work saying this is for staff only and we MUST NOT forward it to our mates. I need you to cancel so I don't get fired."

But it specifically says only for nhs not to be forwarded so I’m not sure people with morals would book. Everyone knows that the people being done at the moment are the most vulnerable. Yes they have known about people misusing the link and are now asking for ID. However, if a large amount of people book and are turned away when they get to the appointment that is still going to deny those eligible the chance for a spot

Don't date to ask anyone I got told off for asking the question whilst volunteering in the north won't do it again

Dubiousdebbie · 31/01/2021 18:26

@Spiratedaway You know what I think you should get one, it’s the least they could do to vaccinate the volunteers and I’m all for let’s get people in last minute to use up the rest of the batch.
It’s the sheer cheeky fuckery of using an NHS link by people who WFH and are young and healthy

TheVeryHungryTortoise Your thought about people being ashamed of a health condition rang true for me. My ExH has cirrhosis, he hasn't told any of his friends about this, (they all bought him bottles of booze for his birthday). He has never in the 40 years I've known him, volunteered for anything or been involved in the community. Has just volunteered to be a vaccination volunteer. I'm wondering if he thinks he will get the vaccination through that, so he doesn't have to admit he is in an earlier priority group ie 6 from the others (and me) who are in 7. He has been working from home for 11 months now. I am going to work frontline but non health job, with no underlining conditions, I'll be miffed if he gets his jab before me!
