Is it just my school or are the majority of pupils in school boys?

I have noticed at our primary school that most of the children who are in school are boys, I would hazard a guess that it's probably around 5 boys to every girl. In DS's class there is only one girl back and the rest are boys with SEN (I know this because the mum's are quite open about thier DS's diagnosis). I was wondering what the situation with other primary schools is as I can't help but think that what impact this may have on girls, especially the girls with SEN but are yet to be diagnosed.

No. Our school has a pretty much 50/50 split in all yeargroups.

Marmite27 · 30/01/2021 20:51

Quite easy to achieve in DC1’s class - there’s 21 boys!

Siennabear · 30/01/2021 20:52

Just looked at one of the photos school have put up on tapestry this week. My sons in reception - there are 10 boys and 3 girls!

DifficultBloodyWoman · 30/01/2021 20:52

Boys are more likely to be diagnosed as on the autism spectrum and with adhd.

Those are the types of SEN that mainstream schools deal with most often now, as opposed to dyslexia and vision impairment etc.

What you see in your daughter’s class is probably typical across the board (although I am not sure of 5:1 ratio).

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 30/01/2021 20:53

Dc1(10), 2(9) & 4(5) have boy heavy classes (roughly 75% boys), dc3(8) slightly over half are girls. Dc5(3) he's in with mainly girls on his nursery days but I don't know how that will translate when he moves up to reception.

SirSamuelVimes · 30/01/2021 20:55

I'd guess due to SEN the vulnerable children are more likely to be boys.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 30/01/2021 20:56

In my year group we have 7 girls and 4 boys coming in across the week.

lavendervay · 30/01/2021 20:56

My local authority tends to always have far more boys up for adoption than girls...logic would follow that more boys are in care than girls, so more boys are classed as vulnerable perhaps?

Christmasfairy2020 · 30/01/2021 21:01

Nah more girls in mine however it is an affluent area tbh and only 2 kids not in. All the parents drive big bmws and brand new cars Grin (not me) as I'm only a nurse.

Christmasfairy2020 · 30/01/2021 21:02

When I say affluent area I mean the area her school is in

seepingweeping · 30/01/2021 21:03

Much higher girl ratio across my sons year

110APiccadilly · 30/01/2021 21:03

There are more boys in care than girls (I'm dredging up a half remembered lecture I went to here). In a few areas the ratio is really skewed - these are areas where asylum seekers arrive as unaccompanied child asylum seekers are almost all boys. But iirc the ratio would be skewed even without the asylum seekers.

x2boys · 30/01/2021 21:05

Neither of my boys are in despite my youngest being In a Sen school with an EHCP so there you go it's all anecdotal

ShouldHaveCouldHaveWouldHave · 30/01/2021 21:11

Loads more boys in our school. One day last week we had 4 girls and 17 boys in our year group bubble.
DC says there are usually 3 girls in their year most days and 8/9 boys.

SophieB100 · 30/01/2021 21:25

High school here - yes, about 3 boys for every girl in school.

dingoesatemybaby · 30/01/2021 21:41

DD1s class is pretty 50/50 but DD2 is about 70/30 girls/boys. She's year 1.

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 30/01/2021 21:43

Christmas fairy - only 2 children not in!!?! Wow.

daisychains8 · 30/01/2021 21:44

Right now with KW and vulnerable children in we have 5 boys and 1girl in, in my class.

Littlebelina · 30/01/2021 21:52

Ds is only boy from his class in.

BogRollBOGOF · 30/01/2021 22:32

My boys are in girl heavy classes. 12/18 and 11/20 split.
Not worked out the ratio of boys: girls from who's on live learning.
Autism, dyspraxia and dyslexia and an EHCP in the pipeline (delayed due to lockdown#1) isn't SEN enough to be in school though Hmm no child with SENs is in in DS1's class (I know them well from doing interventions with them).

2boysand1princess · 30/01/2021 22:45

I think reason is boys being more vulnerable to SEN and also girls tend to be higher achievers academically, so schools probably offered priority places to those students who would benefit more by being in school.
In my 2 boy’s schools it’s the same, more boys in and hardly any girls.

Londonmummy66 · 30/01/2021 22:52

I'd guess due to SEN the vulnerable children are more likely to be boys.

The UK is really crap at diagnosing SEN in girls as it displays differently and girls mask better. Nearly all the literature on autism until recently was only about boys symptoms - only recently has there been research to show that lots of girls are autistic too - just have different symptoms.

I guess that once again girls with SEN are being overlooked as vulnerable as they are masking their problems.

Once all this is over it would be fascinating for someone to do a study on schools that were oversubscribed for keyworker and vulnerable places to see the proportion of girls and boys that were turned down and why.

Oh yes, I completely agree. Was rushing earlier but completely in agreement with you.
Rockbird · 31/01/2021 01:31

Just had a count up. We have just over 100 children on our list and 50 of them are girls. I'm surprised, I thought there were many more boys.
