Covid after vaccine

TotoAnnihiliation · 30/01/2021 13:06

I feel very worried today, my lovely dad who works I a hospital has tested positive for covid. He had the first vaccine in December as he is a key worker, over 60 and has a couple of underlying health conditions - diabetes and asthma.

I feel a mixed bag of emotion right now. He was working on covid wards with full ppe. The management team had said that he should have been ok because of the vaccine. He is isolating at home, with flu/ heavy cold symptoms.

I really hoped that the vaccine and ppe would protect him.

I know of three people who have had the vaccine and subsequently had a positive test, two had no symptoms at all and tested negative a week later. The other is currently on day 7 and has cold symptoms but nothing else. Do hope your dad feels better very soon

Thank you @skoobysnax - I'm scared, I thought (foolishly) that he would be ok with the vaccine.

The vaccines have all been approved on the basis that they reduce illness not prevent it.

I know you’re worried, I would be too, but please try and remember that your DF is in a much better position than he would have been picking it up two months ago.

Yes it was a shock for us when FIL tested positive in hospital as he's already very sick, but he was actually fine

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 30/01/2021 13:28

A heavy cold doesn't sound bad at all. I'm sorry your day caught it but this is exactly what the vaccine doea, makes it mild

Ihatefish · 30/01/2021 14:05

Surely it’s been posted everywhere though that the vaccine reduces symptoms rather than stopping you getting it or transmitting it (which is still be observed) hence the need to maintain behaviour and the exasperation of healthcare workers listening to those vaccinated wanting to go back to normal, hugging etc.

The vaccine will most likely prevent your dad becoming as ill as he might’ve become.

TotoAnnihiliation · 30/01/2021 14:53

I have think I've recovered from the initial shock now. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he will have it mildly.

Fingers crossed for him

Obviously we can't say for certain what will be the outcome for your Dad OP, but if he has had his first dose of the vaccine his risk of a poor outcome is lower. Of course it's a shock, that's completely understandable, remember that you can still catch covid after the vaccine though. The whole reason for vaccinating is to give the immune system information about the virus so that it is better equipped and able to fight quicker when it does encounter the virus. Your Dad's immune system will currently be going "oh good, I remember this virus, I know what to do." Hopefully he will be able to fight it off quickly and feel better soon.

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 30/01/2021 15:31

Also, remember that symptoms like fever and tiredness are showing you that your body is fighting something. So not necessarily a reason to worry right now.

FromTheAshes · 30/01/2021 15:32

My dad's care home went down with a covid outbreak a week after they all received their jabs. Around 50/60 residents have so far treated positive but so far only a handful of hospitalizations and a small number of deaths, much fewer than at this stage of the outbreaks his chain of homes has experienced before the jab was available. I'm keeping my fingers crossed my dad will be OK. He sounded rough when I spoke to him and his Alzheimers has taken a huge hit but even with underlying lung issues he's not needed anything other than in-house carer support.

Sorry for your dad op, I hope he pulls through quickly without any complications.

TotoAnnihiliation · 30/01/2021 15:39

Thank you for all the positive messages all. He had already been on the phone to complain that my mum is annoying him.

How is your Dad today?

TotoAnnihiliation · 31/01/2021 19:36

He is making his way through tiktok. He has apparently lost 7 hours on there today. He is paying attention to the advice and resting up. Lord knows where he found tiktok! He said his symptoms are like the beginning of for.
