Do I need to isolate?

My BIL (lives with Dsis and children) tested covid positive today after feeling flulike yesterday when he came home from work. He had the vaccine 17 days ago, but is coughing today too. Sis had the vaccine 11 days ago. So far she and kids are fine. BIL looked ok yesterday and not ill. His flow test was neg, but the test he did last night at the centre was positive today.

I briefly saw BIL when he came home from work as I was visiting Dsis. I was there in his company about 5 minutes. Said hello and left. DSis and I are in a family bubble.

Do I have to isolate as I only saw him briefly at 2 m anyway?

@davidsSchitt what I quoted was from the NHS website

Then you'll know that anyone who had been in his home, for example, a cleaner or a bubble member in the hours prior to him becoming unwell does indeed have to isolate.

@Lifeispassingby

There has been no close contact with BIL in the 48hrs prior to his symptoms so you don’t think you need to isolate. However you have been in his house which you weren’t supposed to be so that changes the situation somewhat doesn’t it?
I am in their support bubble because they have a disabled child 🙄

If you were in their house for an extended period of time in close contact with those who had been in close contact with him then you should isolate too.

@joystir59

It's why I won't be getting tested if I feel unwell or if my support bubble tests positive. I don't get paid for self isolating and I'm not risking the financial wellbeing of my household. Sorry but that's the harsh reality.
If you wouldn't be prepared to isolate, you shouldn't have formed a support bubble.

I will isolate and get a neighbour to collect their shopping. I don't have an issue with self isolating. They are the only people I've seen close up in months, and I've stuck to the rules all along. Im sure my risk is low for catching it because there was no close contact. BIL did a lateral flow home test (supplied by his employee) and it was negative, but a real test at the main centre a few hours later was positive, so I'm not convinced the lateral flow he did the day before (also negative) was correct, so sis is possibly infected.

It's all shit but it's better to stay safe.

Yes, you have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for covid ....

GreatBigBeautifulTommorow · 30/01/2021 09:49

@samanthawashington I’m glad you have chosen to isolate Flowers

Lateral flow tests are really unreliable and shouldn't be used to confirm infection in symptomatic cases. They're there to try and identify some asymptomatic people. I have a weekly rapid test but would never trust it if I had symptoms.
samanthawashington · 30/01/2021 10:44

@pickyomix He was asymptomatic for the one the previous day, but flu ish on the day he had the better test. I think they are only 50% accurate.

When a member of our bubble. Tested positive. We were told. We didn't need to isolate as only had seen that person for about 10 min indoors the day prior. Their lounge is quite big so the 2 sofas are 2m apart anyway.

Thank you for isolating 👍
